That's the key right there Screwloose, your screws sound pretty tight to me. That's a nobel goal for any site, but by censuring all "political discussion by design" I think it diminishes this site. I honestly do folks. Bear with me here, I'll try and be brief!

Lets take my server joke issue and the looters one (I think I remember the post and comment in question). Kids can hear and watch about looters and certain servers on their phones and the news anytime (depending on the channel of course). They should be seeing and being exposed the these realities of life at the earliest appropriate age. I had to lecture my almost 17 year old daughter recently about a posting she re-tweeted on twitter because it had heavy political overtones to it that she didn't fully understand. I didn't want her to be misrepresenting herself. What's the solution to that, "shielding " her from twitter in the first place, we know that's not the answer. The answer was to explain the other person's tweet to her more fully so she saw the big picture. Once it was clear that she now understood it fully, I let her decide whether to keep it or not. My point is that I don't buy the argument about these particular issues harming kids.

I was one of the original gang to move over from the old site. I don't know all the details in question, but Scotty has discussed some of them a few times. From what I personally saw, and what others have commented, I understand the issue to be not that there was political "discussions" on the other site, but that the moderators were controlling it in a biast fashion. I don't know what Scotty's last straw incident was all about, but we're grateful that he finally had enough and decided to form this. I understand where Scotty's utopia would be somewhere where he could live in peace without political overtones after the other experience.

The problem is that you cannot ban politics from modern life, facets of politics permeate most aspects of our daily lives. This site has dealt with some things I am aware of, but I see other things here or there that get by without any problem. I even had a friend that I invited to the site quit after having 2 postings of his deleted. He is a liberal leaning individual and exchanged some comments with someone of a more conservative nature. They were both adults and worked it out after a few lines and the thread moved on, but moderation ultimately moved in and deleted it all. After being censured twice like that he moved on.

Like I said above, this site is what it is, I now tell my server jokes somewhere else. The loss for me is that I have family here, but we're prohibited from discussing the single thing that manifests itself over many of the other thing that we're allowed to discuss. I'd much rather be talking politics with the folks that I've gotten to know and respect for many of their other views and ideas. I grew up in western NY, went to Buff State, and was indoctrinated into the liberal world like most other NYers. Fate intervened when I moved to Ohio when I was 21, my brain still had enough plasticity to think for myself, and I slowly evolved into an independent slightly conservative being. If anyone is going to make me understand liberal or more conservative ideas again its not going to be strangers on a new web site, and its certainly not going to be ANY news site. My family here are going to be the ones whose opinions I'd respect the most!

Finally, I propose we establish on a trial basis a formal Political Thread with appropriate disclaimers and juvenile warnings. Short of the obvious no nos like racial/sexual bigotry or folks describing their latest dreams of blowing up the white house (Madonna can't join unless she promises to be nice) everything else should be fair game. Folks whose kindergarten or 1st grade report cards indicated that they "do not play well with other children" should be excluded too. Moderators might ease up a little on light political themed stuff in other areas (come on now, she even admits that the server was a mistake), or they could just flag it for banishment to the political thread.

Give it thought again Scotty............. I'm really dying to hear what Wildwest, Gasifier, Stinny, Yooperdave, HDRock, (just scratching the surface here not leaving anyone else out) might have to say about the days political events!

Try thinking of FHC as a church....don't turn anyone away and accept us with all our shortcomings without being judgmental.

How's that for wanting to respond and still manage to stay out of trouble?????

Personally I like the no political policy, I can't see where there is anything to gain from allowing it and it also puts pressure on the mods on where to draw the line on what to allow and what to delete.
Everyone is happy when nothing is deleted, lets be happy and try not to post anything that crosses the line.

Another vote for no politics. There has to be forums out there regarding politics, I just have a hunch.

We had a terrible problem discussing politics on another forum and when this forum was started it was decided that we would never discuss politics! Its in our commandments!

When I was younger church had a nun with a yardstick. Who's going to come up with the hours that job requires ? I hate to say it but it is a subject that goes nuclear in an instant. And maybe just maybe be the destruction of this unique site. I'm new here but I've been lurking since pre 200 members.

I could do it, I've got 3 years of Catholic school getting whacked by nuns in the early 60's. Plenty of experience. Mom finally pulled me out half way through 3rd grade after nuns said I was becoming a rebellious delinquent. Blamed her since she was working full time (early 60's remember, not that common then). Boy, did she give them both barrels. Pulled my 3 older sisters and I all out that day, and off to public school. God was looking out for me that day, and I prayed thanks!
