Nephew sent me a txt to say some logs have been in the yard at the stables where he works. They were cut two year ish ago if I want them . Off I goes with my 12 inch saw ,grief I could have done with a 36" some are over three feet wide Never one to turn down free wood I set about it . Probably just less than a ton from the one I'm cutting and two rounds of the piece on the left. Had to chop em to small bits as big as my saw would cut . Somes not the best in the world but most is pretty good. Not a clue what it is but some reads 20 on the meter and will all burn when it's dry enough .
Yes, a bigger saw would certainly help out, as would a trailer, but good on ya for making sure with what you have.
That certainly need cutting, splitting and drying ASAP . Anyplace to rent a bigger saw for a weekend ?
Never thought about it to be honest , just take what you want when you want it he said So no rush it's not going anywhere . It's all for me I just have to fit it in with when nephews free to go over with me
I've whittled away on some big ones with my small and smaller saws. It's just time consuming. My plot was half clear cut 50 years ago so nothing on that half is very big so I get by. I've borrowed a bigger saw for a couple of big ones though and if I had more of those I'd have to rethink owning a bigger saw.
Only know my brother with a saw and his is the same one, not much call in the uk most big trees are protected
I'm guessing maple. Looks to have some spalting too. If it were stable, it would have made some really nice boards.
Would have made cracking boards tables or anything else had it been stored in the dry . But a fair bit has been spoiled by two years of weather. Maybe that's where all the main tree went
By the way some of it is light as a feather where some is really dense but not wet . Apart from the ends and bits that have got wet under the bark which iv chopped away .
Yeah those dark wavy lines means its spalted and deep too so you'll have some nice stuff to work with. But im afraid if you dug into the stuff thats really light, might chip away more than you want or its probably too rotted away to use for anything. The solid the better. Ive been trying to get some spalted stuff for my knives as scales but they keep splitting on me. Need investment in a table jigsaw not hand.
Gosh thats some pretty stuff as I look at it, looks to me if you wanted to make something decorative, a lathe would do some good. Im no way even a novice but i have some nice pieces at my place that would be a boon for people who turn that sorta stuff.
Almost all the main pile is this kind of stuff how good or bad iv no idea until I get into it . Way too heavy to move so it's destined for my fire
