Never burned any but was able to get my hands on 2 cords for NEXT winter. Won't burn it till October. It's already c/s/s and smells like an old school or old church. Kinda took me back lol. I know it's hickory consistent. Hard to split etc. I'm guessing it will but like hickory? Thanks guys.
I agree its in the hickory family. Burns hot with a nice mild flavor in the smoker. My favorite dual purpose wood. I don't see it much here in St. Louis so I keep it all for cooking. Could you tell I'm a little jealous? Great score!!
It'll burn good, but I get small score every once in a while. But it goes towards the smoker. Great on Steaks and Burgers...
I've never burned any as we are just north of it's grow line, but if someone wants to send me some chunks for the smoker I wouldn't say no!
It makes good heat. Probably around the same btu's as red oak. The coals last longer which can be good or bad.
I had a great stash of it for 2014-15 burn season.... a little fire buggie, but like mentioned above, throws good heat. It can be a bit of hassle to split(hydro), but if you study the grain, it can be done with a fair amount of ease- that only matters if you decide to resplit I gave TurboDiesel some smoking chunks and got some turned pens out of the stock in return!
