Just saw this on Craig's List. They're located on Long Island, NY. I understand they're Doug. Fir, but this seems pricey......gold plated? Doug, are you watching? http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/fod/4327836019.html
Supply and demand dictate cost much like oil, gas, propane, etc.. Firewood cost goes up due to increased gas and diesel cost and hopefully after this winter will not go up due to demand..
I am watching, but I NEVER comment on what a retailer sells their pellets for...that is totally set by each dealer. I can tell you that Bravo Window on Long Island is a very good customer of ours and sells dozens of trucks of our pellets each season...Douglas Fir included. On Cape Cod, we have a dealer that sells these same pellets for $419 p/t or $9.00 each per bag...and they sell volume as well..... I would not be surprised if Douglas Fir are not my largest selling volume pellet in 2014/2015....they have been VERY well received.....somebody thinks they are worth the money
It is Long Island, I do remember the burners say they are paying more for top notch stuff than we do on the main land. And Doug did say he doesn't set the end price, That is the dealers. He does fetch more for these than the Okies and BHH brands though. Ahh well. He beat me too it!
Well, you can spend $400 a ton, but why? No one is going to drive by and see those parked in your yard. I have MWP and their heat is driving me out! Actually, it isn't the pellet. It is what they are being burned in. Since when does a decent pellet that gives decent heat have to be bought at market prices nearly twice the cost of other decent pellets? Will you get twice the amount of heat from them?
If the MWP work for you Savemoney, then that is what you should use. Baskins and Robbins has 31 flavors of ice cream so there is something for everyone. There are so many different factors on which pellet(s) will work for one person, but maybe not his next door neighbor. Maybe the other person has a larger house and need a pellet to produce more heat or just doesn't want to screw around with the ash as much...others have no problem with it....you are very lucky to have 3 pellet mills very close to you in Maine, but others aren't as lucky and the product has to come from much farther away. Maybe a certain brand of pellet isn't available in that market. We don't sell any of our product in the midwest, PA or OH and only have 2 dealers in NY and 1 in NJ....we simply don't have the excess product to service more markets. I haven't taken on a new account for 2 years now and most of my dealers are ordering more from us, not less...even with small price increases, so as I have said before, somebody must think the product is worth the price. Last I checked, nobody is holding a gun to anyone's head to buy these pellets... There is no perfect pellet that works for everyone....so as you have heard dozens of times before, try before you buy in quantity to make sure the pellet will work well in your stove, in your home....to many people have bought pellets based on price alone, only to find out the hard way, they got a great price, but lousy value.
Doesn't seem that bad, but I have no idea what a usual cost is. I saw pellets being sold at Fred Meyer when grocery shopping last night and they where $16 a bag.
I'm assuming you are referring to Geneva/Maine Choice, Corinth, and Maine Woods. There's actually a fourth, Northeast Pellets out of Ashland. They were the first and made a decent pellet. An explosion destroyed the plant. They've rebuilt, but the quality isn't what it was. Don't actually see much of them in my part of Maine, mostly in the northern areas.
Ashland makes a true softy(dust from saw mills) too, Just need to get them to compress them more and you might have a winner. I didn't check ash content cause they lacked the heat. But seemed to be about average. With work they could be on to something, I hope anyway.
The bags I bought I believe were a blend. I don't know what's up with that place, though. I went by there twice last summer during the week and there doesn't seem to be a lot of activity. Only a few vehicles in the yard, no trailers being loaded, no product in the yard. Go by MWP, there's product everywhere, trucks coming and going, a cloud of steam over the place, obviously busy. Not so with Northeast. In fact, I went by the summer before and thought the place was closed. The 5 bags of Northeast I bought I got at HD in Presque Isle and I did see it in a few other places. The only place selling it around here is Rocky's where Savemoney and I bought our stoves. He want's $250 for them and Idon't think they're worth that much.
Heating oil is going for about $3.97/gal now around here. Pellets would have to be $470/ton or $9.40/bag to be EQUAL to that price per BTU in my situation.
I had a chat with Mark. He said the super premium adventure was an all softwood pellet even though it said wood on the bags. He couldn't get the hardwood blend clean enough to stay below 0.5% ash to make the super premium grade. He didn't specify all softwood because there could be very slight amounts of hardwood, But though it would be less than 5% at most. Not sure they kept the super premium label. May have went bark to the blend? I haven't seen them in awhile maybe like early 2012. My only suggestion was they needed to crank the compression up to give us more heat and I would buy them. I found them at TSC IIRC.
Would you be referring to Matt? The owners name is Matthew Bell. Last year they had some in your neck of the woods with a label on the bag that said 100% recycled wood. I cautioned a poster on the old site to be careful, they may be full of junk if they were recycling wood. Matt took exception and we had a PM exchange which is what led me to buying some this summer to try. They were a nice clean pellet, light in color, just didn't have a lot of heat. They looked better than they performed.
I was at a home depot earlier and saw about 5 people looking for pellets. I was there for 15 minutes talking to a buddy that works there. Zero pellets. A truck may come in Tuesday they say.
It wasn't the owner, I think I talked to the quality guy. I got some gal when I called and she transferred me to a fella named Mark IIRC. I chatted with Matt in a PM or two about the recycled wording on the bag. I even stood up in one of the posts for them. Everyone though they were using the same junk as Inferno. Saw dust is considered recycled wood products in the trades. But the people on the street think it was wood from construction waste.
I believe I was involved in the discussion on that old thread. I should have tried some when I had the chance.
