I just pitched the concept of a firewood episode to our local NPR show Talk of Iowa. Hope they like it. What would you guys like to hear covered on a one hour show?
The truth about seasoning, it's devastation to chimneys and fire, it's effect on epa stoves, and watching out for most of the wood sellers junk wood. Even proper ash disposal and storage.
Yes.....good points WS. The main one is the importance of getting ahead on your wood stash (3 years, ideally). That, in turn, will make burning wood that much more pleasurable and efficient........ Also, maybe tell people that its alright to hoard firewood.......and we've got a great awareness group for that!!

Not to grandstand, but I think it would be great to bring up the upcoming Challenge and the current movement to find cleaner ways to heat with wood.

NWW and Jack, I don't want to start a political issue nor argue, but I would like to here about how the government will stay out of the little guys wood burning business. NW my old stove is the "LEAST" of the problems with the atmosphere! I have over 2000+ pages of research to back it and a dear professor friend of mine who has his Ph.d in atmospheric conditions and works in the usgs. "please, please" let's not go down this road....... I want to say for the record! I am all about the air and the water!!!!!! and nobody will fight harder to protect it than I will; But we have "MUCH" bigger problems than our wood stoves.
I think one BIGGIE that is overlooked in the woodburning world (especially by the rookies, and yes, we were ALL rookies at one point) is the difference in species of wood and their drying times, respectively. As many have pointed out many, MANY times, oak takes MUCH longer to season than say silver maple...those drying times are undeniably one of the biggest factors in proper burning, and the misconception of all wood being equal (in regards to both BTU's and seasoning times) plays a huge role in the efficiency of ANY stove or fireplace... A big thing to also talk about is the importance of some people that believe burning green wood in OWB's to be efficient, when that is actually opposite the case! Proper education and such, will make woodburning good for everyone involved.....
I agree, and if you read my post above that sums up the BIGGEST problems that give woodburners bad names to begin with... Lets do our best not to let this thing get political, boys.....
I would also like to note that, bringing lite to cleaner burning issues "is a good thing" but it also draws out the crack pots who fixate on laws and more regulations for us. Therefor in the future we are forced/stuck doing what the laws/Government wants us to do! Case in point, some dorkhead is trying to ban beach fires in So California, Why?..... here in NJ, we can no longer "buy or have" outdoor fireplaces or pit's unless they were here before the law was passed. The more eye's and limelite we put on ourselves, the more we are going to ruin it for ourselves
