hey guys and gals, been a while since I've posted, but keep checking back on everyone's hordes! My bro in law sent me a picture of a couple rounds he found on the side of the road that a tree company left behind, can anyone tell me what it is? He said it was very hard to split, so I assumed Elm. But I have no idea.
Looks a lot like black gum (tupelo) to me. At first I was kinda thinking young sugar maple, but the bark ain't right for a young tree. If it's black gum, it's probably one of the most miserable woods to split. Good to see you again, WoodovenAT!
Thanks Scotty!!, I was hoping it was something more "exotic" like hickory or something, guess I'll be loaning out the ol splitter this weekend!
I was thinking hickory based on the heart wood. but it could just be a wet center. . . the 4th row down on the center right is definitely red or black oak.
The large pieces look like pin oak to me. We have an abundant amount of pin oak in Missouri. If it weighs a ton and is stringy to split and smells a bit like manure that would be my guess.
The pins must look a bit different in MO but that is okay as there are some regional differences sometimes. Around here the pins are a bit smoother. Some don't like the smell. I don't mind it at all. Some seem to hate all the red oaks and the way they smell. I'll take them though!
I answered in the other thread you have. The good news is that the oak you have is even better than pin oak!
