Seems like the knurling on the insert should have a decent mechanical bond as long as I give it a good whack. If nothing else, it should flare it enough that it wouldn't work it's way into the cylinder. I wonder what alloy the inserts are made of, I wonder if they're harder than the head.

I've wondered if they sometimes have it in stock but act like they don't so they can charge shipping.

I think theyre steel, so yea, harder than the head.

I use timserts for m5 and love them. I couldn't justify the cost for the other common sizes for saws... so I'm trying this save-a-thread.

I've gone the Sav-A-Thread route multiple times. Something temperature resistant for a sealant is mandatory (remember this thing will see temps of 200 degrees or more) and yes, the knurling is plenty to keep it in place mechanically. Most saws are a gasketed seal for the spark plug so make sure the insert does not sit proud of the cylinder surface.

The inserts are steel but thread strength is only as good as the surrounding material. ;)

Is there any crazy stuff, like different thermal expansion, that I need to worry about? What about dissimilar metal and corrosion?

Still waiting on rings, isolation mounts and fuel lines from the dealer. Call them today. I opened up the carb thinking it should be OK since it was running last week. There was saw dust (at least that's what it looked like) inside the carb. I ordered an OEM kit online.

There may be, but not drastically enough to cause major weakness or failure.
Corrosion, naaa. Maybe after a long time? But then again bearings last in mag cases for a while with no issue.

I ended up ordering a 1-7/8" ball hone. I need to hit my Husqvarna 55 when I put rings in it soon.

All the parts expect the carb kit has come in. Looking forward to get one running.

When you use that ball hone put some oil on it and take it slow and easy. I would run mine in one direction and then reverse it back to the other direction. It does not take long to scuff up the cylinder.

I do not know what grit you bought but I think 10 to 12 seconds will do fine.

It gets better. I called a dealer in Chardon and they quoted me 6 and change for the rings that I paid 9+ for at this dealership.

The spark plug is a steel thread in an aluminum thread. ;)

No he is pointing out that a spark plug is steel, in what an aluminum head. Your repair insert is steel in an aluminum head. So there is no difference, yiu actually wont be removing the insert so i guess you could say not as bad.

He is pointing this out because you asked about dissimilar metals.
