I really wonder how much of this comes from it being a floor model.

I kind of doubt any of it. Really not trying to harsh (I want everyone to be safe and warm) but 850 stove top temps is an over fire situation in my book. You gotta figure that thin piece of steel is probably at 1300+ degrees during that period and it takes a stove top quite a while to catch up with what is going on in your flue and firebox. I just honestly think it has been burnt way to hot. You should take a good look at the welds and make sure everything is ok and maybe lay a flat edge on different panels to make sure nothing is warped.

The manual on my new this year insert says that a stovetop temp of 840 or higher should be considered an over fire. I have not gotten mine over 675 and it is cranking at that temp. That thing must be rocking and rolling at 850.

    Yep sure did.

Guys, please keep in mind I wasn't running it at 850, that was a run away temp. That's as hot as it got. If there was a damper on the input it would have never gotten that hot.

    None taken.

The reason I am thinking it may have something to do with it being a floor model is that I haven't seen this place load off season stuff into a tent and store it for long periods of time. I could see water getting in the flue and giving all this a head start. Not that it did happen, just a possibility. I think it's got more to do with the thin metal and a few hot fires before we learned how to control it.

What did I miss, no control on the primary air?

Yep, just a built in damper on the flue, too low and causes you to burn your knuckles. I took it out and moved it a little higher.

Yep, just a built in damper on the flue, too low and causes you to burn your knuckles. I took it out and moved it a little higher. It wouldn't close far enough because it hit on the flue, much better control after it moved.

I used an "all nighter" for 15 years. It looked like new the day I took it out. My son has it now. You need to get a really hardy stove, one with thick plate steel and will stand up to a Varity of situations. Find one with easy to get replacement parts.

It's an EPA exempt stove. It was designed with a 35:1 fuel/air mixture rate (so you CANT choke the fire).

Ever seen those US Stove or Voglezang Boxwood stoves? They have an intake on the door, but the ash plate, is so loose, that the air adjustment is normally useless.

I would highly look into getting a different stove by next season.
