Kind of, because pipe Union is tapered..

Compression fittings of any kind just do not require Teflon tape.
The thing that bothered me was people might actually think the guy knew what he was doing, and they should do the same.
In that situation that probably wouldn't hurt anything, is just ridiculous

I bought the 22 ton DHS 2 years ago and have split about 10 cord. I cut my oak in 18 to 20 inch lengths with a maximum diameter of about 16 inches which is the weight I can safely lift onto the splitter. The machine easily splits this size wood and only kicks down to the 2nd stage in the knotty blanks. This machine has plenty of power for the size and type of wood that I split. I welded up a large log holder out of 3/4 inch tubing which helps with the processing. The cycle time is fast and I have had zero problems with the machine.

I'm thinking about the DHT 22-ton. Would prefer the 22-ton Ariens with the Suburu engine, but @ $1199 vs. the DHT for $899, I gotta go DHT. Plus, additional 5% off for Lowe's cardholders.

I have the Kohler engine on mine, I think some are Briggs if I'm not mistaken. Mine was a return so they had to put it to the side and mark it down. No one including the manager really knew for sure why it was returned, the best we could figure out was the hoses leaked because they weren't put together correctly. Whoever returned it must of just not wanted to deal with it. It came with full warranty so I went for it. Asked manager if they could mark it down any more and they were more than happy to. I applied for a lowes credit card for another 5% discount and walked out with it for 724.00! I have since seen other splitters that were returns and marked down so that's something to check out.

Have about 18 hours on it now and has worked great for me. The ultimate decision to buy one for me was because i was burning more and hoarding more(thanks to all these fine folks) and I wanted to be on my schedule not the rental shops. Went to lowes for some stainless hardware and came home with a splitter, wasn't looking at all that day but it was like a sad little puppy sitting all by itself and it just followed me home.

My only issue is my motor surges occasionally. I've looked into it and it seems that a lot of the Kohlers have done it. The fix isn't hard, I just haven't gotten around to it.

The thing for me is that I don't even have a stove yet! I've been trying to get wood ahead of the stove right now - but I'd rather get the stove installed first, so that way there's no turning back. Getting estimates on the stove and install this week.

I've been scrounging wood on CL for a few months and then splitting by hand. I just ran it through a cord calculator and I'm at 1.1 cords, less than I thought. I feel like hand splitting is not sustainable.

That's very prudent sir, getting some wood seasoned before hand. I split by hand for many years, this is my 3rd season with hydraulics. While rewarding and physically a great stress reliever and workout, what you will undoubtedly encounter along your hoarding journey are the legendary PITA's of splitting (elm and other stringy incidentals) that really take the fun out of splitting by hand. If all I ever had to split was straight grain red oak, ash, beech, etc., I'd have never purchased a splitter. Looks and sounds like you're in this for the long haul Mr. Maul so keep moving forward with your plan, let us know what stove you're considering, etc and we'll spend your money when you're ready

Agreed on the straight grain stuff. There's times when I'll say "who needs a splitter" when splitting some ash and there's other times when I'm taking 10 hacks at a gnarly knotty piece of maple and cursing myself.
I also think my process flow would be better with a hydraulic splitter. Currently, I unload my truck, transport the rounds a few at a time with my little dump wagon, stack the rounds, then when I want to split, take off the rounds and move them to my splitting stump. I think it'd be better just splitting off my truck and then transporting only the splits. My yard is way too small for any kind of utv/tractor, so that's out of the question.

    Currently, here's my stacks:

and my unsplit backlog (bigger rounds stacked on side - then smaller rounds and branches in foreground).
