After a $400 electric bill I decided to get serious about wood burning. In the last 3 weeks I've cut 2 cords of wood, built a woodshed, bought a 25 ton woodsplitter and upgraded to a 77% ZC fireplace. I have been bit by the bug haha. I'm obsessed with harvest firewood. Mostly oak, a little elm and walnut....or at least that's what I think the grayish brown wood is. I need to hone my tree id skills.
Welcome aboard, keep on hoarding. That oak will take some time to burn really well most likely so if you are building your stash for next year get the elm and walnut or other quicker drying wood. Then work on that oak for future years.
Okay most people I've talked to around me (northwest Arkansas) say 1 year is good enough for oak, but the longer the better.
Welcome davidlandon Great set up, excellent start towards the three year plan That pic of the curly grain is amazing Do you have personal or family experience heating with wood? Primer on Woodburning by Backwoods Savage Responsible Wood-Burning or How to Not Make Your Neighbours Your Enemies
I'm sorry, but that was funny. Pics....it's what we live for....well, that and firewood. Welcome aboard to another Dave!
Welcome to the club, David! Keep the pics coming! Your oak will need about three years to dry to 18% moisture content . Trust us on this one You'll be pleasantly surprised when you burn the three year old oak. It burns hotter and more efficient and won't cause creosote build up.
