Too funny the place where I grabbed the 802's has Vermont wood pellets. Now the question is would it be worth an additional $15.00 to get these over the 802's ? They list for $305 as opposed to the 802's which are $290 a ton . With what quick research I have done it seems so but please chime in . Thanks !
Well, being in Maine, I don't have access to either one. From what I've read on this site, they're pretty comparable. It wouldn't hurt to buy a bag or 2 of the Vermonts and try them for yourself. Every stove is different. The beast you have should love either one. FYI, most people love Cubex, if you ever see them. A hardwood pellet. Harmans will burn about anything, but I can't get a lot of heat out of them while others, including Harman owners, rave about how hot they are.
Thanks Sub I have seen them somewhere(Cubex) not sure but will have to look now that i know . Might just grab the 802's unless someone chimes in before I head out tomorrow being that they do not sell pellets until 1 pm tomorrow (dairy farm I believe) Thanks again !
I get more than enough heat out of my freestanding Harman. enough that the handle on my stove get's dangerously hot burning Hamers and other top grade pellets..
You'll find Cubex at Hamshaw Lumber in Keene, NH. They were selling them for $249/ton and delivery they my area was $25. I picked up a couple of bags and they burned clean and hot. Worth a try.
My P61a loves Cubex. As Sub says though, some people's stoves don't like them so much. Of course my P61 wasn't overly impressed with some DF's last year - and I wasn't impressed by the ash, so you just never know how your own particular set up will work until you try it.
Hmm, last time I saw Cubex for sale naywhere, they were 300+. I may have to take a trip to Keene and grab a few bags (1/2 ton ought to do it).
Well the one time I was able to get several bags of Vermonts years ago, I found they had great heat but gunked up my stove pretty good. Another local with a Harman XXV had the same issue. These were bought from the same place so it may have been a batch thing and I havnt been able to give them a second try since. But I would say that at 305/ton and Lacrete and Spruce Pointe selling for significantly less, I wouldnt be inclined to go too far out of my way except for testing purpose. It would be nice to know if our issue was batch related in case Vermont become available and at lesser pricing.
Definitely worth a try at that price. I havnt seen them in a while either. I think last time I saw Cubex was somewhere in Hampton-Dodges Agway maybe? Disclaimer-now that I have found several great pellets at decent prices and a few really good ones at good prices, I dont really beat the bushes as much anymore. At least not at this time of year-maybe in the spring when looking for good deals.
the only place i can find them around here is $300....maybe next year more places will have them. they burn HOT and clean
Yeah - with so many tons sitting in my yard/garage, I'm not really looking. I got Cubex last year from an individual off CL for $5/bag. They play well with others (mixing to reduce ash) or work really well as a stand alone so if I'm in the area I could be really tempted to go ahead and stuff the truck. Disclaimer - I'm rarely out towards Keene, so most likely I won't be picking up any Cubex anyway
Around here Lacrete and Spruce Pointe are only $5 less for a ton, cant touch them for less than $300 a ton. Curious when this "gunked up" occurred I certainly don't want to experience that was it this season ? How hard were you running your stove at the time as well if you don't mind. Anyone else have experience burning Vermont's ? Thanks a bunch
Bogieb, I burned some Firs last year,[Okie] and I noticed lot of fully un-burned pellets and ash when I did the Room/auto. On room manual or stove temp the ash was just a coating on the burnpot and pellets we're fully burned..
All right this is awful strange to me but that may be because I am a nub still with pellets and pellet stove for that matter. Unless someone has slipped me some acid these 802's are burning with a flame that is fairly green at the base of the flame, not always but as the stove ramps up its definitely green. Wish I could take an accurate picture so ya'll don't think I'm tripping out here . Just noticed it passing by the stove now thought I saw it last night but attributed it to some fine Bourbon. I have seen many different colors in fire including green when adding something to it but I thought these are pure pellets. Anyhow comments welcome and no I swear I am not tripping or I dont think im tripping hmm could I be tripping ? Hmm so now I may have solved the riddle of why that waitress had a chit eaten grin on her face the whole time she was serving me ! Thanks
I think my point was that firs being so dense, they need a good steady long fire to be 100% consumed, and room/auto especially during shoulder season just doesn't keep the fires going long enough.
Most everyone loves Vermont. The ones I and another burned had a sticky residue that had toi be cleaned with a putty knife. It wasnt stove related as nothing else that year did this. Now we both bought bags from the same pallet so it very well could have been a batch issue, IDK and I would definitely give them another try if I could. I had the same issue back in 2010 or 2011 with Greene Team. Again nothing else did that during the burning season and I had no issues with GT the year before. On both the stove burned them just fine with good heat but the cleanup later was a PITA.
I see that from time to time. It's due to the various nutrients or such that the tree has absorbed over it's lifetime. At least that is what I heard, or thought I heard. But then again, I can't hear. So maybe I'm dreaming?
Yeah, I seem to recall trying to buy Cubex from a CL ad last year, too. Seems some pellet burner north of me beat me to it. Trying to recall her name.
