So this Saturday I had a friend join me in taking down two pine trees that had blown down during a storm this Christmas. First time I attempt this size that have blown over, and I have to say these were not easy. Totally miscalculated the tension/compression on the left tree. But we took our time and got both down safely. Managed to cut everything into firewood size pieces and all that remains is to split and stack
Pazora, It looks like you got/had a great experience. A fair portion of my wood comes from blow downs or storm damaged trees, usually Gumtrees (Eucalyptus & Corymbia), Golden wattle (Acacia) & Australian Blackwood (Acacia).
Watch those blow-downs with large root balls. They can stand up straight real quick and turn a really good day into a really bad day! Nice work glad everything worked out for the best.
Well done. Any tree with an attached root ball can be quite hard to judge on compression/tension sides because the root ball itself often wants to stand back up.
Yes I learnt the hard way many years ago. I was working my way down the trunk of a eucalyptus tree when it stood back up. Unfortunately I was straddling a lower branch when it did. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It was a painful learning experience but luckily I was young enough to bounce. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
