Madison Door Gasket

Kimberly- did you ever do a smoke test?

 

I don't know what this means.

 

The problem was that I was unsure with this particular instance and let's just leave it at that. I did say something about a whole new door unit because I would not have to attempt the repair and possibly break the glass and not get it correct. The door would just be a drop in and I did say I would return the old unit for ESW to inspect. However, the resolution reached was that a new glass and gasket will be sent and I will get my BIL to help; another set of hands will be helpful.

The big issue is not if air is leaking at the top by the gasket; which it could be since the gasket is not in proper place. The main issue in this case appears to be the glass was cut wrong and is not being held at the top. Mike told me that they buy the glass from an outside source and they are passing along my photos and information on the defect. Hopefully others that purchased the Madison are not looking at similar situations. This could result in the glass falling into the stove, then of course the fire would burn out of control, possibly over firing the stove and also the house filling with smoke which can kill you as you sleep; most people die in fires due to smoke inhalation. I am using the stove at the moment; however, I am building small fires and letting the fire go completely out before I go to sleep at night.

LOL, I did not question your sense of humor just the fact that on forums it does not always come out as intended.
Edit-That is why we have the little smileys but even then it might not work.

mike holton ; Mike, I took the old glass out of the door and measured the height; it is the stated size of 12.625 as per the manual; I measured at both ends to check to see if it was true. Now I know this glass gets wrapped with a gasket that adds to the height on both sides. Just wanted to mention this. Of course the new glass is prewrapped with the gasket so I can not measure the new glass. I will install the new glass and see how things go.

 

Mike, I think the real problem is that the tabs are not long enough; wish I had thought to measure the length when I had them out, the door is together again so I don't want to disturb anything. Do you have specs on the tabs? Has ESW any other feedback about the door glass being loose, etc?

Update is the tabs are too short; the glass is probably correct size though I did not measure the new one; I could have peeled the gasket back but did not think about it. Have not heard back from Mike and I doubt if they have longer tabs but they should change the tab lengths because this is an issue that probably faces all of the Madison owners of my size stove, the 02 model.

 

How short are they?

Rather, how long are they supposed to be?

Then there are more (others) with the same problem?

Just seems odd that no one else has "short tabs" that I have heard of...
