LP was telling me I better get after some of the better wood once I get cutting again because of all the good stuff we burned this year, attached are some of the trees mother nature put down last summer.

5401 I'm hoping came down, 7374 is a big old beech, might have some good wood towards the top, the rest is a combo of maple (sugar I hope) cherry, red maple.

I was thinking of you guys with all those downed trees this past weekend. Normally I'm cutting to release crop trees (thinning), so the downed trees are low on the list, but I did cut part of one large downed maple on Sunday - took two trips to skid it all out. Close to 20' of the main stem will stay where it landed due to its past life as someone's deer stand (some metal showing, some likely lurking deeper). Had some hanging overhead debris to deal with - glad I'm not doing a lot of that sort of work.

What type of trees do you have on the lot you purchased?

It is mostly White Pine. When my parents bought the property it was all pasture. They planted, as a Christmas tree farm, many thousands of White Pine, some Red Pine, some spruce, etc. The White Ash, some Elm, and a few other species (sparse) have grown in naturally. Those trees paid for Christmas for many, many years, and more. Lot of good memories.

There is enough Ash there to heat my home for the rest of my life. Hopefully the cold will come back next year and kill every rotten EAB in Northeast!

My brother said he read an article that explained a study that was done on EAB and the survival rate. I guess it was incredible what kind of cold they could survive. Until it got to a certain point, then the survival rate was very low. I believe he said it had to get down below -30 for it to start killing them real good though. We were close. Very close. Hopefully it was enough to kill a lot of them and every dam tick in the area though!

That's a lot of Ash, we have some but not that much. We'll always have something killing are trees, maybe mother nature will take care of them.

It'll never get cold enough to kill the ticks especially with any snow pack. We get a real heavy dose of ticks(the dogs do anyways) in May-June and they seem to disappear by late summer here, probably latched onto all the deer and rabbits by that point in time

We never use to have a problem with ticks. We use to run and play in these fields and woods all spring, summer and fall long. Never had one on us. Just recently have they come into this area. My wife has pulled several off the dogs the past two summers. Winters have been much milder for a long time. Until this one.

You probably have a larger population of warm blooded animals to host the ticks - deer populations are much larger than they once were not sure about your neck of the woods but most of the country was nearly hunted out from early 1900's through the 60's-70's when conservation really stepped up and helped the numbers rebound.

Get some chickens or guineas they will help the tick population.
