I'm in central Iowa at our office working...2.5 hours from home. Drove up in our parking lot after a meeting and look what I found.

An old hard maple was looking pretty bad so the City dropped it. The city leaves them along the street for a while so people can pick what they want for firewood.

Joy filled my heart, until it donned on me I was driving my Ford Focus instead of my truck, which usually has my saw in it.

I kicked myself until I took a closer look. I saw the trunk and bigger branches were already rotted and punky.

Luckily I can borrow a truck and throw the good wood in it until I come back next week with my truck. :)

Right where I want to be.
Lots of good usable wood in those big chunks.
You're def. between a rock and a hard place.
Hopefully, it'll still be there next week.

Can't haul it in your car? No problem. Just throw it up onto your shoulders and walk home!

That wood should walk itself home, C/S/S on its own, just because Chuck "the schlot" Norris looked at it....

I was able to use a truck to drive my new find home, plus while I was at a marathon afternoon meeting a co-worker loaded up the smaller good stuff for me!

There's plenty of good stuff in those trunks. Get all you can.

I'll have to see what's left by the time I get back next week.

Ready for the big game Sunday?

I don't like all the mess from punky wood every time you handle it (I handled a lot while slowly going from the 0yr to the 2yr plan).

Sometimes I'll split off the good pieces from something like that trunk and throw the punk off to the side to rot away. (Easier to do when the wood processing area is out of sight)

That rotting wood makes garden soil if you give it a year or two to finish. Not the ideal use for down wood but nothing really goes to waste. We need good soil to grow things too.
