How often do you clean the stove glass?

Just out of general curiosity, how often do you clean the stove glass?

I used to give mine a quick clean every morning before firing up. Then, I got better at making fires last, and having coals left in the morning so I'd let it slide for days at a time unless it was pretty hazy. I was more concerned with getting that fire roaring than pretty glass.

These days, I don't even care anymore. My goal is moar fire, less oil burner. :thumbs:I've cleaned my glass three times since firing up in October. December 2nd, and today (both shutdown chimney sweeps), were the last two times. I treat my little stove like a work horse, and never mind a white haze, as it doesn't affect the burn.

Where is your head at for cleaning?

I let it go long time till about Christmas. After cleaning then, I realized how much I liked watching the fire so have burned hotter since and cleaned once (yesterday) since then.

Cast iron door, no looky at fire unless it's open...

Of course, ceramic glass shouldn't need to be cleaned often if the fire's burning hot, and even tho cleaners abound and some stove manufacturers recommend ways/products to clean it, it can be scratched (al beit finely) easily.

I haven't cleaned mine since I shut down last spring. It's still pretty clean, very light white haze.

Right where I want to be.
Not sure, but a few times.
I wet down a couple paper towels and give it a quick scrub. I might use a little ash on the first one if the haze is a little stubborn.
Usually, a hot fire will take care of things pretty well.

I clean it every few days, 'cause I like it clear. Usually though the fire will keep it clean. It usually cleans pretty well with plain water, but sometimes add ashes, or use vinegar if too much.

As a fire viewing addict :)rofl: ), I like a very clean glass. The stove does a great job of keeping it clean, but no matter how hot I burn it, over time a very light haze appears on the glass that annoys the heck out of me. I usually take out ashes every few weeks and clean the glass at that time - cleaning is nothing as it just takes a few wipes using a paper towel with stove glass spay on it; the haze is so slight that the paper towel hardly changes color at all.

I burn in the air setting range of .5 to 1.5 on my stove - the low end results in black screen cat only burning and I never get any black buildup on the glass.

During the work week if I don't get home at all early, I'm down to coals unless it really cold and I have been using a lot of locust. So I swing the door open for about 5 minutes to let the glass cool a bit and give it a little cleaning sometimes every day. My glass gets a slight black in the bottom outside corners on a low and slow....air wash just does not hit that well.

Some stoves including mine have a air wash system so I can burn for quite some time 23/7 without having to clean it but despite this I will get the white haze on the glass that others have claimed and since the stove will run for weeks on end I admit it will get foggy. The odd time I let it go out due to being away for the entire day or its just time to do a bit of maintenance I will give it an easy wipe with a damp paper towel. Sometimes Ill use a paper towel and ash which does ok if my stove glass is a bit to warm. Rarely do I have to use a glass cleaner but I have some and use it maybe once a year. Im a clean glass guy and like to watch my burns like a tv show but sometimes when its uber cold outside I care little about this and just want to create some big time btus.

I think we have cleaned the glass maybe 3 times this winter? It's been several weeks since the last time and it still looks ok, at least I can still kind of make out flames in there, I think....

I've cleaned mine exactly 1 time this season so far, and that was when I had the door off to replace the gasket.

I'm not that fussy and have not cleaned the glass yet this year. Same thing last year so the only time it got cleaned was the annual summer cleaning, but then this past summer we replaced the gaskets which included the gaskets for the glass so it was natural to clean it then. The glass does have a haze from fly ash but that does not bother me. Heat is what we have the stove for and to be honest, the glass is just so I can see what is happening with the fire. We don't sit around starring at the flame; we just sit around enjoying the heat.

Twice this year I think, just the haze buildup, it looks so nice when it's clean.

It's a big pain with the BK since the crust is really hard to get off. Razor blade tough and the reward is looking at a black pile of logs quickly mucking up the glass again. So once or twice per year.

The NC30 gets cleaned every few fires because it is so dang easy, just a white dust and the reward is the view of an excellent fireshow so I do it probably too often.

Im curious Highbeam, do you have to clean the chimney for the blaze king more often than the NC30 if you were to equal out the same amount of fuel usage per stove?

I sweep both chimneys once per year only. The NC30 is actually a lower emissions stove than my BK per the specs. I run the NC30 hot all the time and when I sweep I get light brown stuff and not a lot. The BK is run 95% of the time on a low setting. So low that my internal flue temperatures are only 400 which I purposely hit to try and avoid condensation in the flue. I have burned full loads at only 250 degree probe temps but quickly mucked up my chimney cap. The BK makes more creosote with a 1200 degree cat element than the non cat, and it's black which indicates to me that it is a "cold" creosote accumulation. This idea that a cat stove eats everything and emits only water and CO2 is false in my experience. Now the accumulation is not excessive and I feel safe sweeping it just once per year after burning 4-5 cords of PNW species.

Before the BK I had a hearthstone heritage on the same hearth and chimney. I burned at least an extra cord per year due to the inefficiency of the non-cat and frequent restarts due to short burntimes. That hearthstone was usually run as low as possible for a non-cat but barely put any deposits in the flue at all and they were light brown.
