I'm greedy, I harvest about anything, well maybe not willow. I have a hydraulic splitter with a 21" tall narrow wedge made from 1/2" thick bar with the 4-way horizontal blade 8" above beam. It makes a big difference with stringy wood. This past summer I took down a standing dead elm around 4" diameter at breast height. My daughter & wife were operating the splitter. I generally will half or quarter rounds larger than 30" but this time I decided to noodle them into 6-8" wide strips so they could be split into blocks instead of wedges. I was amazed how much smoother the split surfaces were. I was told by my wife & daughter strips were the way to go with elm in the future.
First glance at the wood says hickory to me too. But the bark isn't Shagbark and that the only hickory that I have come across.
Got two loads out with dad today after work. I got lucky and caught the worker running the mini excavator and he loaded my trailer up with some 12ft logs. Then dad and i cut the trunk off a 24" oak and winched it onto his trailer in three 16ft sections. The pic doesn't do the log pike justice. There's a few hiding behind the bigger logs. That does look like hickory more likely bitternut - usually has a less pronounced furrow but they all burn and smell the same. You have chit load of work to do, hopefully there is a enough space to stack/store cause there is several years of solid hardwoods there

Thanks guys! Luckily we have plenty of room for it! Dad owns the property next to me and between the both of us it's about 8.5 acres. Once we fill up my processing area we'll start droppin em in his field. Good thing i just ordered more chains! Here's todays haul after work. Got some bigguns on the trailer. This log actually made the tires squat!
If your going to process that log with your 359, you better get some snickers, cuz your gonna be there a while! lol What a nice score! Ted

Ted how many saws you got ? 385xp sounds like a PNW saw, they have some big wood. Minnesota got some big evergreens or hardwood ? I see campinspector cutting some monsters on Vancouver Island. 372 xp I think.
Oh, I have a few I guess. lol The ones I take to the woods are the 359, a Jonny 2171 and the 385xp. I don't often need the 385xp, but dang it, it sounds so nice! So it gets used more than it needs to be. I do most of the cutting with the 359 up to about 16 inches and over that the 2171 comes out to eat. Most of what I cut is either blow down or standing dead, bark off, red oak. A big tree in this woods is about 30 inches at chest height. And then I have saws that I fix up to sell. Just sold another 2171 last night that was real clean. And have a bunch more coming up too! Hard to put a number on them as it is always changing. Ted
Ted, the 359 will eat those logs for breakfast! Might take me till dinner time though haha. I might just grab a few snickers. Went back this afternoon and grabbed a quick bed full of tops. Just trying to wear myself out a bit so i can try and sleep tonight. Headin in to work at 2am to push the white stuff once again.
Got another pickup load today after work. The pile's growing And whatever that mystery wood is ( log with the dark heartwood ), it likes to eat chains! The sapwood cuts like butter then the heartwood is like cutting concrete
