I've seen some installations where it amazed me just how far from the house the boiler is but no doubt it works. For sure those who are heating a milkhouse or work barn or something similar have to have some long runs; just part of the installation you have to put up with. I know a neighbor who has a boiler that is about 60 yards from the house and maybe 50 yards in the other direction from his shop. When he started heating the shop he was amazed at how much more wood it took even though he heats it only to 60 when he is working there and cooler at other times.

I made myself a calculator today with gas and propane conversions. If anybody is interested I'll email or run your numbers and post.

I can do a weighted average of up to 10 varieties of wood. Just give me the breakdown of type and amount by cord.

Ex: I have a 3 cord of 50/50 oak and maple. And I'll give you the BTUs, equivalent in gallons of oil, propane and their cost.

Can look at it in terms of savings in heating or value sitting in your pile.

I would guess 1.5 cord here...less than 2 for sure.
I just looked at the 90 day forecast for our area yesterday, it showed that "winter" per say is basically over after this last cold spell...we'll see. We've had very little snow here...
    Amen bother!
My dad and brother have almost the exact same setup, only they heat a garage and a shop instead of the barn...what they use in a month would easily exceed what I use for the whole winter...

Maybe Grizzly Adam can convert your code to make it work on the website? Like his cord calculator.

We been through around 1000 liters, I think. That's 1 cubic meter.

It's been a very mild winter so far.

It would be okay for me if you were right but it is still almost 7 weeks until March and even then winter is not usually over at least for us. Time will tell. I know it would surely be nice if we didn't get more of that nasty cold. I don't mind the snow but don't like the really cold any more. Think I got spoiled in those winters we spent in Arizona.

Oh no, don't blame the winter weather (or the possible lack thereof) on me! :D;) The weather guessers can't even get tomorrow right let alone the next 3 months! But it wouldn't surprise me if they are right, (for our area) it has been a pretty mild one so far (one short cold spell and one longer one) we have had very little snow here.
As far as my guess, at this point we are overdue to get pounded! :picard: :binoculars:

It feels like we are burning a lot right now, but we have barely made a dent in the main wood room.

The bad thing about a warm winter though is that usually that means a late spring and quite often frost when the fruit trees begin to blossom.

Interesting that the winter seems to be mild on both sides of the pond.

I have been thinking on our situation. We are experiencing what I would call an average Iowa winter-- we've had our warm spells, our -40 stretches and our January thaw. But we have burned less this year than even last year when we had a very warm "el Nino" winter. What can this be attributed to? The new window panes I installed in the three living room windows! Now I really can't wait to get the other main floor windows "double paned."
