Had to run to town this morning. After about a mile on the gravel road I start to hear this awful noise. Kinda like finger nails on a chalk board or (GULP) a front wheel bearing that is about ready to implode. After about a split second I remedied the problem. Turned up the radio so the noise was no longer the only thing I could hear and sped up the truck. Got to town and did my business and headed back home. Truck is still squawk'n at me so I got on the paved road and put it to the wood. Noise stops after about a mile or so. This only happens a very few times and only on older Ford trucks that I have driven.
I know what the problem was so I wasnt to concerned about it.
    Do you?
I wonder how many folks have freaked out when this happens to them?

Hmmm, a constant squeak seems more like a brake pad indicator. I’ve had a wheel bearing go bad on me 3 times and it always made a “squeak, squeak, squeak” sound with every revolution of the wheel. If you let it go long enough it will eventually sound like a constant rubbing sound, but that took several tanks of gas for me.

    Yup
Prolly got in between the dust shield and rotor.
Backing up and turning wheel full both directions may dislodge it

Yep. Just a rock twixed the rotor and shield. Dont happen very often but it sure makes a racket when it does. I just wonder how many folks woulda freaked and taken it right to a mechanic? Must be some thing about Fords. Never had it happen on a G.M. truck.

No cats here, just a Jotul tube stove and maybe a bucket of corn cobs soaked in fuel oil to keep the model T warm on the way inta town.

Ah yes. How many remember the days of cats crawling up into the warm engine then laying by the fan blade. Start engine and all H breaks loose.

I only allow ditch tigers to keep the mice outta my wood stacks. None in the hooch, none in the crock pot. Well, maybe a make shift Chinese diner or 2 when times are tough.

Pretty sure one of my cats when I was young got a bite from a fan blade. IIRC about a 1/2" long gash above her eye. Musta used up a few of those nine lives!

Not to much shoulder of the road to drive on round here.
