I'm hoping this will be the coldest day we see this winter. The temperature doesn't seem that bad but it is downright raw out there. I moved some wood from barn to porch and had to change gloves a couple times because my hands got so cold. Of course that was not the only part of my body that got cold...

But then, this is the sort of day when you really fully appreciate having a wood stove!!!! I hate the thought of ever being without one.

Speaking of cold, yesterday we had our water freeze up twice. My own fault though. The tank and pressure switch is in a pit but I never got around to insulating it as I should have. I did have a light in there but evidently it was in the wrong place so after the second time of freezing I moved the light and all has been well since.

Good part is that no damage occurred with the freeze.

I went out last night when it was 6 and got a buggy load my hands got cold pretty fast, I was not wasting any time throwing that wood in the buggy, I'm glad there was not much wind though

18 here now too, bit of a breeze, but raw as described. Glad to be inside, & I don't say that too often. Wood heat is as good as it gets in this weather! I rebuilt my well house in October, & insulated the crap out of it. It's attached to the side of the building above ground. We ran electric to it thru the wall, & 2 vents. Set a small fan from the inside to circulate warm air from the building & put a thermo controlled heat tape on as back up. Coldest return air back in so far was 55F. Boy is it nice not to have to worry about freezing up the water.

They changed the building codes here so that the well head has to come out above ground. Got my first frozen line not long thereafter. Glad they have a "new and improved" code.

Of course the pipes freeze at night so there is enough water in the pressure tank and the first sign is the water running out once you get good and soapy during the morning shower. Makes running outside to deal with it a double bonus.

Since my wife grew up in Miami and had city water, the well freezing up was all new to her. She thought I was some kind of genius when I fixed it with a cardboard box and a halogen work lamp.

I ended up putting an insulating bag over the well head and a foam rock over the insulating bag. On really cold nights, I set the dishwasher to run in the middle of the night to get some water movement through the pipes. Works well enough here in NC without needing additional heat, but I doubt it is enough for MI.

I was presented with the opportunity to work through the coldest days of the winter so far! Sheesh!

One day to the next day there was a 60 degree colder difference in temperature! Gotta love it!
