The dealers used to sell ROPS at cost. I've read the the axle trumpets on a 8N may break in a roll over.

mike bayerl curious as too why every one loves the HST? I got gears cousin for sugaring op has grand l 3800? with HST.. am I just different? the only place I could see a huge difference is loading a truck or easy bucket work.... I have driven both... I know I can change a clutch.. maybe I just like mine better cause it's mine and prior tier 4..

bosses new JD 75 hp has back to dealer so many times for computer screwing up.. last week had to borrow mine as his lost 4wd... not a biggie for me.. he was mad paid xxxxx thousand dollars it won't work your 10 year old won't stop.. never should have traded in old one

The HSTs are more productive mowing, and doing loader work (light or heavy) than ANY gear setup and the overall cost of ownership is way down compared to a power reverser gear or traditional gear setup. Easy to drive and reliable as gravity. The power losses are forgiveable in this size machine and with the advent of electronic controls (Deere and Kubota premium lines, maybe others now?) makes the losses even less noticeable.

I'm sorry your bosses green machine has caused him headache but IME the electronics on newer machines are extremely reliable. When repair is necessary, a knowledgeable tech doing the repair will go a long ways towards a positive experience.

That's an issue. A lot of Ag mechanics don't like all the tech. Some of it is due to poor design. It's going to take some time for them to get up to speed. If ever....

Has it truly broke down? Or is it just a light flashing on the dash? My 7320 will show something almost every day. As annoying as that is nothing is wrong with the thing.

And the tech they put in stuff is not always the best and they revert back to old. I assure you if they didn't have the attainment issues with exhaust we wouldn't have all this crap on the engines.

I'm around logging equipment and not Ag tractors, but the new Tigercat loaders went back to hydraulic valves in the cab controlled by the joystick this year. When the new model was done which is now the old model it went with electronic switches that controlled a remote valve. Well the switches created a delay and they didn't have a feel of what they were doing, and the switches were always breaking . With the valve they can control and better adjust what there doing with the grapple. The new loaders like I said went back to valves. Half a dozen years trying to make it work just to step back to the way it was before that just worked. Makes yiu wonder how cheap and reliable and still effecient a machine would be without all the regs?

Love the electric hydraulic controls on the rear scv's. There easy to set & they feather very well. On the loader not as much. It's either moving or its not. It's a pain when trying to do something precise.

yup.. we both believe John Deers makes good quality stuff... dealer is talking to corporate now...

Maybe it's me.. I sometimes pine for an easier age.. my first car sits in garage I can still tune that 327 with a timing light and screwdriver by ear..
it sounds nice.. 2000 Saab produces same hp out of 4 cyl turbo gets 30 plus mpg and need a computer tell ya what's wrong with it.. I can sit in front end of chevy.. but need to be a contortionist to change a headlight in Saab and subaru..

just glad my tractor is simple!

    sorry about :Yar: basod

The OP from basod said he wanted a tractor for the woods and hills. To me, that sounds like a lot of tight maneuvering, loader work, and general back and forth driving. This is why I recommend an HST. If it were for mowing, working row crops or mostly field work, then a gear tractor makes more sense.

True can't beat the hst for wiggling around- Maybe the newer ones are better but the whine from tranny pump in my MF wears on ya. I also agree with the electric over hydro being heavy handed, operator not withstanding- just can feather them things like a straight hydro.

Yes, Fasternal's ship store to store is some of the cheapest freight shipping you will find. I thought about seeing if I can get the price of the ROPS reduced; they had two just sitting around and at 3 cents a pound for scrap, selling to me at a reduce price beats what the scrap yard will give them for it. Even $325.00 is a bargain for a RPOS made for an 8N; doubt if I could built one for that price if I could do the welding.

There has got to be something in an old '49 machine still putting out when you need it. Yes, the engine was overhauled years ago but that is about it. It could use some trans work, hard to shift into first gear but I know to baby it and not force it. For ploughing, I can run it in second; first is really just for pulling which I don't do a lot of.

The radio in my tractor died overnight. Should I replace it with another digital or go back to the old am only dial type?

Do you have a regular tractor radio or a car radio?

The control valve broke in my splitter, should I replace it with some electric switches, computer controls, remote WiFi for IP control through my smartphone?

Now that the wiseguy stuff is out of the way; a lot of time it is not about making something better but reducing the cost without regard to the end user and the crap they may face in using the equipment. "Hey Joe, how can we reduce our cost here?" "Put in a switch and some cheap wiring and we can reduce the cost of hydraulic hoses." "Sounds good to me Joe, make it so."

Car radio will fit. Don't know if it'll be plug & play.
