Any surveyor that drives a railroad spike into a live tree needs to have his azz kicked. I spent 25 years in the surveying and engineering business before my current job, and I don't know of any surveyor with more than yarn for brains that would do such a thing. If you don't have a telephone pole to drive the spike into, use a chisel mark on a rock ledge, or use a long timber spike and put it in the ground. I have driven PK nails into root flares before, but never more than a couple inches off the ground. The hunters with the spikes for the tree stand are just as bad.
That's what we had on our farm. To me that is pain to do in the first place. Had remnants of 12 stands from trespassers till we got serious with it. Last straw was when one decided to sight in his gun using the barn as a backstop. I never could understand how all the cans, food wrappings and everything else gets so heavy the can't carry it out. We were even ordered off our own property because we were trying to cut wood one Saturday. Guy walks up and told us to leave because "his" buddy gave him permission to hunt here and they had driven over an hour to get there. We'd have to come back some other time! I informed him that WE owned the property and to tell his buddy that him or you are no longer allowed here. People's entitlement is insane.
3, 28" chains will take a while to get back into cutting condition no matter how you do it. That hurts. Did it break any of the cutting teeth off.
What your talking about is a big problem almost anywhere you go. The big land owners where i live used to give access to responsible people for hunting, fishing, woodcutting, etc. Not now! And there are a couple that even patrol with choppers during the warmer months. During the 90 s i worked for a timber co that had 55,000 acres just 14 miles from town all employees had access i miss those days.
I defiantly know what your talking about. Back in the early 80's I dredged for gold, I was able to go to a rancher and get access to a creek, I even signed contracts stating that I would close all gates that I used and pick up my trash and give them 20% of my findings. All a person had to do is be honest! I met some very nice folks this way.........Then there were the AH people that would leave gates open change their oil in the creek and leave trash everywhere.... It got to where all gold miners were not welcome.... I've even been told at gun point to leave....... Times have changed for sure!
Without a doubt it is the few creeps that ruin it for everyone who is responsible and respectful. Times have changed.
just got home from surgery on shoulder.2 tears and more.finger typing lefty with nerve blocked right.give me a few days guys. hard to type much
Take your time and just use the mouse and the smiley bar to post anything for awhile. OK? There's a lot of choices! Even something for no response!
they gave color pics before leaving and said they give dvd of procedure. no dvd yet cool stuff but don't recommend. too much hand splitting/chopping as a youngin'
Kevin in Ohio Glad to hear your sense of humor is intact. It helps to josh about surgeries after the fact. Heal up fast.
not joking about the pics and dvd. that's true. apologize to op for thread derail. i'll shut now i'm the horse. i'll blame the oxy an vikadin.want to quit that stuff asap.
Buried a good three inch inside the tree , found it on the last lot of wood I scrounged . Think I got way more than lucky on this one . Six nails and cut either side with saw . Only found them when I split it with axe , hence the bent nails.
Holy crap........ I can just visualizing a chain looking shredded like a sardine can by those nails, probably set your log ablaze with the sparks alone.
I walked our property with a forester last fall. I've got big oak and beach on the back property line with remnants of barbed wire along the stone wall. He told me they wouldn't be interested in anything along the line because of the fence. He explained that when metal is in the wood it'll bring a blue vein up above the metal, as much as 10' above where it is or was. After one cut if they see blue they know there's some metal below and avoid it. Did you see any of this when cutting?
