Been pretty mild here - I've burned maybe one-half cord. This is not counting shoulder wood, softwood, lumber scraps, and ugly pieces that I just wanted to get rid of. Cold weather is supposed to head our way tomorrow but today is supposed to get into the high 50s.
Has been mild here as well ,but still burn just about 24/7 since Oct. Have burned about 2 cord so far but the furnace has only been run for a total of 1 hour.
Checked last night. I miscounted. I just finished my 5th pallet last night so I've burned just over 2 cord so far.
It appears perhaps about 2 cord would be the average (guessing) of what most folks have burned. It is also very apparent that most folks tend to burn their uglies and softer woods until January. It might be interesting to see what the rest of the winter brings us and how much more wood we'll be burning.
Boy you got that right Dennis. At the current rate of usage, I've got enough here to be on the 3yr plus plan no problem. There's at least 10 cord laying around here in various stages of processing as well. Been told by a few folks now that it's gonna rot before I can use it. I just nod & smile.
Just over a cord. Been burning mostly poplar and red oak. Its been a normal winter so far with some swings from cold to mild as is usual in Indiana. Going to head out and prolly get some wood cut this weekend.
You folks are making me feel bad. I'm well into my 7th cord. We have an CB6048 heating 2 old farm houses & heating domestic water for our barn milkhouse. I'd love to get 1 or 2 years ahead on my wood supply but it seems nary impossible.
That's a lotta wood! Can you buy your way into the 3 year plan, then keep it up with your own labor? Welcome to the club Farmchuck !
I've burned about a cord, really slowed down the past week. It has been warmer than usual , and not being home as much over the holidays and such. I'm trying not to get into the good stuff, Oak, Hickory, & Cherry to much. But this is when we've usually get the real cold. We've pretty much had snow cover, about 4 or 5" inches for the past month. About ten inches of ice on the small ponds, less on the bigger lakes, fine fishing on the coves and bays though.
Not bad considering the fact that you are heating 2 residences. Add that to the possibility they may be poorly insulated plus the hot water and you're right about average-ish!
I've burned through three cords so far this season, hard to count since I have been burning year-round with my OWB since it was installed in 2005. I usually figure my heating season starts when I stop burning all the junk and uglies in the yard and start actually taking decent firewood from the stacks. That began somewhere around the first week of October. So about a cord a month. However, I expect that to slow WAY down as I just replaced the old leaky OWB with a brand new Heatmaster G200 gasifier. I'm not even 24 hours into using it and have already noticed a substantial decrease in wood use. I used to have to put 15-18 splits of wood into the old unit to get a 12-hour burn, and last night after the initial firing of the new unit I only had to add 4 splits to the firebox to get it full again. The new OWB will be shut down in the summertime, unlike the old one, so I will have a better estimate of wood use after this winter is over.
Welcome to the forum Farmchuck Probably not out of line with heating 2 houses and the water for the milkhouse. This also tells me you have some long lines for the water to travel which no matter what will tend to lose some heat. So, keep on cutting and burning! Oh yeah, I don't miss those old milkhouse water heaters a bit! Don't miss washing the milkers in a cold milkhouse either. Shoot, I don't even miss milking the cows. But then, I'm over 70 now.
Just now into our second real cold snap. Almost done with my second face cord of shoulder wood. Hastings downstairs has been idling along since late October carrying the load. Bout 2/3 of a ton of pellets. Prolly ought to restock pellets soon.
It has been pretty mild here as well I have burned about 1 1/2 cords. Although we got to below 0 today and have some snow finally
Yeah I know your correct. Used to have wood stoves burning in both of the aforementioned houses. My parents farmhouse ( the older of the two ) used to take a good 12 cords of wood in an average winter for heat. The one I live in burned 8 or 9 cords in the typical winter. Add the 80 gallon water heater in the milkhouse & the small hanging hot water space heater I have plumbed into the milkhouse loop & I guess it all adds up. I console myself with facts like the mess is all in one location, no bugs in the houses, no risk of chimney fire, & most of all not throwing all that wood in the basements then having to run down there & repile it all to make room to throw more in!
