That's awesome Dexter - Thanks for sharing. I like the "slide" - my son and I have a similar approach through the cellar window and we were just talking about coming up with an improved slide (versus a 2x12). When I burned corn (when it was cheap or $175/ton) I burned 6 ton hauled home in my flatbed truck (with sides) which I fed through a homemade tailgate chute, across a screen funnel, into a homemade wood funnel fixed inside my cellar window well, into a 6" duct and into a "kennel" at the end of the basement. I'd then vacuum it into a homemade bin to clean some more... It was an operation my son was glad to end, lol. Although I had some fun with the whole thing and I found the corn to be a hot burning fuel, it was a bit of a PITA considering all the trouble to get in the basement, clean it and then deal with the clinker "cement" in the pot. Cleaning the pot was worst part....I soaked the parts in hot water for a bit and then scraped and brushed at least 1/wk. Pellets are what I will burn for now on...

Corn does burn hot with a Low Moisture content. But it's a PITA because of the sugars and the clinker. So it had to clean more often and left more of a mess. I also sifted/vacuumed the Pellets and Corn then.

Corn is much more expensive now. But even if it were cheaper than Pellets? It would have to be far (FAR) cheaper in order for me to burn them. It just mucks up the whole stove and is far more work.

The original owner of my furnace ran it one year and ran almost 5 ton of corn and 1 ton of Pellets. After seeing that mess (when it burned dirty) and after seeing how dirty it burned corn with my upgrades? It would have to be below $125 a ton and I'd still mic it 50/50 so it was a clean burn and I could go at least a month without cleaning. I clean my 50F 2-3 times a year. I cleaned it once mid season 2 years ago just to see how far I could push it (I emptied the ash pan every 3 weeks or so). When burning proper and operating at the top of thier efficiency range? They don't need touched for weeks. I add Pellets and pull the heat exchanger cleaning rod every day or two depending on temps. It's been edited weeks since I've cleaned the furnace now. I may go another 2 or 3. If a cold snap comes I'll do a deep cleaning and brush the heat a change tubes and hit them with a blast of air from the compressor

Not knowing my background? I cleaned my 1st pellet stove when I was on "a former site" and Iburncorn almost every day. And it was my sole source of heat as a freestanding stove. It burned great. But after everything I read. I wanted it clear and clean (and safe for my family). I spent over $4 with the stove (Quadra fire CB 1200), Pellets, Hearth, and pipe.
    SeptemberOctober2011 002.JPG

I've since sold that stove and installed another freestanding stove upstairs, the pellet furnace, and a wood stove.

I've just slowly pushed the limits on my stoves and seen what the temps were at what time durations. A dirty stove does affect heat output. But I would much rather go a month or better and not need to take the time. If it's not needed.

I highly recommend to this day that new burners clean weekly and clean the flue every ton. But after years of burning and seeing what my stoves do verses those I've seen online as well as those I've worked on? I know that I am still in a safe zone with my units. My pellet flue for the furnace still wasn't that bad this year. I went 2 season's without cleaning it. I only did it because of the horizontal section (4 ft). It had about 1/4" of an inch lying in the bottom. And that's expected in a longer horizontal section near the end of a run. But the color was still a light grey ash.

I now have an Enerzone Eurostar (one room over from where the Quad was. It's now in the very Center of my Ranch). It's a bottom feed stove similar to a Harman burnpot.

And the Fahrenheit and Englander 30-NC Wood stove are downstairs in my man cave.

I only burned around a cord (just over last year) and will probably burn the same amount this year. I burn more Pellets this way. But it's easier to burn 3 ton of Pellets than cord of wood!

Nice! With that setup, I don't imagine you use much (if any) propane! Do you have a source for Somersets (if you don't mind me asking)? I just noticed you're from NE Ohio also!

I haven't used a drop of Propane in 8 years.

As for the Somersets. Almost every Menards carries them and the Hardware store in Wellington Oh (Farm & Home) also carries them (the only pellet they will sell because they know they are good)!!

And I'm just west of Lodi. So we are technically Neighbors!!

Sounds Great! Once I get all my parts installed (whenever they get here) and the thing back up and running I hit you up to swing by to help dial it in...appreciate the offer and tip on Menards! Love that store, but don't get there often.

Houston, we have a problem, lol....

Finally have all my parts and beginning the rebuild, but the "upgraded" manifold appears to maybe not be for mine? Am I missing something? Are your manifolds more "square" like my old one or oblong, like the "upgraded" manifold?

Take a pic of the other side.

Does the old one have the plate that comes off for the clean out?

Mine is oblong, but I have the 2nd Gen. The 3rd Gen has a cleanout.

If it has the Cleanout? Then just remove the combustion blower from the old one and clean it up and put the new combustion blower on it. Problem solved.

Actually? Looking at the intake side of that manifold? It's much larger. So you have a newer furnace with the Gen 3 manifold.

I call them up and say you sent the wrong manifold and ask for the money back for it and just put the new blower on the old one. Scrape it, wire brush it, paint it (inside and out to prevent further rusting) and use it instead of a new one

OK, thanks guys...and yes, it has the clean-out plate on the other side. I hate to put the old crusty one back on, but thats what I'm doing. I already shot-blasted all the other parts today - this will just get the brush. I also found out mine already has the side-swing sail switch - so if anyone needs one, I have a new one...if not, I will return it with the manifold.

The old manifold is fine. Just clean it up. (I'd paint the outside to prevent further rusting. Don't want it to rot through like an Ohio Truck).

Yessir - I've already prepped everything else with a rust converter for paint tomorrow...I will do the same with the manifold.
