First of all, Happy New year to everyone. Today is supposed to get to 45 degrees and I have a ham bone and Angus beef cubes to use up. I soaked some peas overnight and started cooking them with diced onions and the ham bone and spices. The oven was started with white cedar and maple and then oak. The beef stew was started at the same time. The oven was fired for 1 1/2 hours. The wind was up from the southwest quartering across the oven door, so the bricks were stacked on the left side to help with the draw. Once the fire was drawing well, the bricks were taken out. The coals were raked out to soak the firebrick floor and buttermilk biscuits were put in the popover pan. The meal just about prepped and ready to load. The beef stew is in the Ransbottom crock on the left, the pea soup in the Watts crock on the right. Both crocks were made in Ohio, and great pieces to collect and use. The biscuits only needed 20 minutes. Last minute decision to make an apple cinnamon crumb bake. Everything out and ready to go an hour later. The temps on the crocks were 200 degrees out of the oven, so care was used bringing them inside. The total time was about 4 hours start to finish. The stew meat was tender and the vegetables very tender. The house smells amazing now. I really like to cook this way and learning to time the oven temperature to what is cooking is part of the enjoyment. The stoneware is real nice to use for these dishes. Anything not eaten we will freeze to have another day.
How could I go a whole day and miss this thread????? the biscuits look awesome never mind the apple cinnamon crumb cake and the beef stew and the..... oh forget it! I am drooling too hard over the keyboard. As you can tell, I enjoy looking at these WFO posts.
Looks delicious! Putting time in to make amazing stuff has got to be worth it in flavor! Save your freezer space, ship leftovers north!
Oh boy! That looks great! I told my wife about your cooking, and we'll be making some beef stew, as well as our secret recipe chili in the next couple of weeks.
fishingpol I guess DaveGunter and I are rather predictable when it comes to commenting on your WFO post but it is your fault. Everything looks so delicious and probably smell awesome. Your neighbours downwind of you must just come outdoors to sniff the air.
This didn't last. No leftovers to take with me ice fishing. There is ice, but barely enough here. Some ponds edges have opened back up.
