So was back in the bush ID'n a tree I thought was black walnut and I was right when I notice a fallen tree bark off and took a round out of it I'm not sure what it is, I fell like it's black cherry the wood has a red tint to it but seeing what your thoughts are. Looks like maple possibly. The wood below it looks like ash, but I assume that is from another tree. It could be cottonwood. Is it light?

Splits look a little past their prime but I would lean toward red maple.

Hmm red maple that's a good guess, wouldn't be Cottonwood none of that in this area. What ever it is it burns. I compared it to some of my cherry not red enough wood.

I'm trying to think what trees are in that bush. Cherry, silver, hard maple, Hickey, black walnut, ash, beech and a few white birch so it's gotta be one of those I'd think.

Looking at it again and it could be some ash.

The splits Heartwood certainly don't look like ash. .

The bark on the splits below look ashy though.

    It's firewood.;)

Ash will sometimes have a pink tinge to it.

The reddish streak makes it look like it could be Box Elder. Maple family.

I think you're on to something.

So, Farmboy707 , is the wood fairly light? If so it could be box elder.

I would say cherry except that by the time it gets to that stage it is usually pretty far gone along the outer layers; sort like what happens with many oaks.
