Coming home today I noticed my neighbor was having some trees trees logged so I stopped in an visited with him for a few minutes to make sure the logging was on the up and up (it was). We had a horrible ice storm 9 years ago many of these trees were declining so rather than let them rot he had them cut. I told him if there was any left over after his brother and hired hands got what they wanted I would like to cut some. He said no one wants it because its walnut and help myself but start with the easy to get to stuff first. I grabbed the tractor, trailer, and a couple Saws and the oldest two kids and got to work. Two tops filled a 16' still need to split and stack this week should stack out at about 1.4-1.5 cords. With opening and closing gates this is 6-8 minutes from the house on the tractor via county road. I'll take walnut close and easy over oak that's 45 miles one way any day, looks like I'm going to be busy CSS for the rest of the winter. Now the hard question will be next year do I burn 10 month old walnut, 2+ year old oak, 18 month old elm, or 2+ year old mimosa. Looks like it will be a moisture meter test next fall!
I'd burn the elm, and drink, er burn mimosa next year. Anything that was dead before you cut out will be further along than cut living trees. A MM will help you out to determine. Nice work!
I didn't take you as a mimosa drinker, but if you've had one, you'd know they are gooder. I could be drinking that now, but mimosas are reserved for before 1pm drinking. Sorry DNH, I'm drinking a bit.
Your MM is set to read 100% when you water the trees..... I know mine just did so..........in town. Don't care.
True story, while in college I had to nearly bail a buddy out that relieved himself on a tree in the front yard at my rental house in town. A walking cop caught him mid stream. We only had 1 bathroom, and we both had to go. A court date later and he was clear with no penalty, even though the judge said he thought I was lying that I gave him permission to do that. Whether or not I actually gave my friend permission or not was beside the point.
Same story here except my class mate in the new politically correct society nearly had to register as a sex offender! Walnut pops real bad while burning and tends to produce more ash than some other hardwoods, only about 20 MBtu per cord vs 22/24 MBtu for red and white oak.
I'm pretty partial to it I don't use it near as much as it should be used but when my grandpa sold the farm I had to choose between buying his truck or tractor, the tractor won as some of my earliest memories are riding on the MF 265 pushing trees over (not safe but great memories), checking cows, and bailing hay, cutting fire wood (his Christmas present to mom and dad as well as his parents every year was a cord of wood), I'd love to buy back his old 265 but that time has passed.
