God bless ya, I get my workout using the saw, I stopped using the maul after reading about eye problems and hearing about my friends shoulder issues.
As a fellow manual splitter, I appreciate your effort! 28 inches diameter... very nice! Now I'm gonna have to see how many swings for a 22 inch red oak round I have waiting for the maul. How many splits you get out of that one?
Thanks. I believe it's 8 pounds. Don't know, didn't count them. In the "finished" pic it filled up the top left of the stack. Maybe a 1/5 of a face?
More swings than I am capable of doing. That is some nice looking wood. I would love to have more ash here.
The question of how many swings brings up an interesting thing. Most people think it takes more to split a large round than a smaller one and I think it is because they usually do not split with one and many times even with 2 swings. But altogether when it is done, I'm betting you don't take any more swings than you would with smaller stuff to get the same amount of splits. One just has to learn where to place the splitting maul and then where to place the second and third strike. Most people can't aim too good and tend to try to hit in the same place but the strike ends up a few inches off. Naturally that will take a lot more swings. It is better to lighten up on the muscle if that is what it takes to get more accuracy using a splitting maul or axe. Oh yes, I well remember as a young lad I had to learn this. It was an eye opener for me once I learned the right way to split wood. Today, it is much easier as my body won't take the hand splitting so thank the Lord for hydraulics.
There were 3 large knots buried in the core, which caused some trouble. Other than that, once I got the round down to manageable pieces, the X27 made pretty quick work of it. There is definitely a learning curve on where to strike. I'm better than I was last week, but far from good and efficient. I have 2 or 3 more 28" rounds to practice on, hopefully getting the swing count down each one. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
