Is this sugar maple? These are splits from the large rounds below. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
My Fiskars maul showed up today, so i had to put it to work. Got through the last 4 rounds of what I believe to be hard maple. The maul makes my X27 seem like a toy. I'm not sure I'll use the 27 much anymore. Of course, the obligatory pic: Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Yup once I got my isocore I only use my old splitting axe for the straight gain forest wood I split for my maple syrup evaporator. Nice small splits.
It's been 5 days since I've split wood, mainly because I've processed everything I had. Yesterday it was unseasonably warm, so I decided to go fishing. I wasn't expecting to catch anything, but sometimes I just need to recharge outside. My view for most of the float: Freedom Eagle nest up high in a Sycamore: Today, I managed to score some free ash. Two large trees, and it's all mine! I'm guessing it'll end up being about 2 cord, all said and done. I picked up the first load today, and started processing it after my boy went to bed. Got through about half, and it stacked in about a 1/3 cord. My son asked Santa for a chainsaw, so guess what he got? Yes, he used it to open the remainder of his gifts. If ya get too many rounds, I've got a splitter sitting outside doing nothing other than rusting. Somebody should use it. Namely you. Nice pics of the boy. I see he's already got eye pro
I really appreciate the generous offer. Right now I'm processing by hand to burn a few pounds, but if that changes, I will definitely get in touch. Yes, those are his new ski goggles, and he had to wear them pretty much all morning Christmas day. I really don't know, I'm looking for guidance. What makes it look like silver over sugar to you? Thanks.
As I was swinging the maul last night, I realized that I'm quickly running out of storage space for my stacks, especially after I get through my haul of ash. I'm thinking I'll throw some pallets on my lawn and keep going. I'm not sure the wife will approve, but it's either in the grass or the driveway, and she likes her car in the garage... I'm still liking the ISO Core maul, but the 27 got some time last night as well. The maul is great for breaking down the large rounds, while the 27 makes great splits from the halves and quarters. Here is the obligatory pic:
Yes, that is the plan for now. Just thinking if I keep getting wood, I'm going to run out of space quick. Funny you mention the height thing. Last night I was thinking my stacks were ~4' high because they were about the same height as the store bought rack, which is supposed to hold a face cord. I got out the tape measure, and it was only 3' high. Man I feel dumb.
I stack 5 feet plus due to space restrictions. A 5 foot tall stack will be 4.5 feet after drying. Possibly a little less. Others here build skyscrapers. Iirc maybe it was Pyroholic who goes 8 foot or more?
I cut and split a lot of silver maple. I have never cut any sugar maple, it does not grow in my area that I know of. Silver maple is everywhere around here though. The bark and grain look like silver maple IMO. However, it very well could be sugar maple. If somebody here says it is sugar maple for sure, then I would trust what they say; there are a lot of smart people here with much more experience than I. It will all burn though.
Maybe.. If I can't others here will chime in.. Bark on silver maple is pretty thin, dries fast and is very light when dry..
