Started in on a really good score today. But a little back-story first. Our electric utility is having lots of trees in the neighborhood either trimmed or felled. Our neighbor 4 doors up had a big red oak taken down, plus a couple others. Had been eyin' it, but didn't have a chance to stop by to see about the wood. Knowing that our postal carrier lives at the house in question, my wife was able to make initial contact about the wood while I was at work. She calls all excited that she saw the mail delivered, and ran after the carrier to ask about the wood. We were told that sure, we could have the wood, although much of the wood that was cut lies on the over their property line. Fast forward a couple days, got back to them to confirm what I could get. Was told to take the trunk, and that I should take the other stuff on the neighbor's property too. I intend to do that, but still want to check with them before accessing their property. In addition, the guy then indicates that there's two more trees down on their property I can have. PLUS, he had a tree cut in the back yard which I might be able to get as well. All tolled, I'm probably getting close to 4 cords from 4 houses away! Getting next year's cutting done now! And since pics or it didn't happen...
Killer score man! Merry Christmas to you and yours...You did well my friend and I'm sure the neighbors appreciate the clean-up...(Oh, and you suck too)....
Yeah, the rounds near the base of the tree were around 21 inches diameter. These were the second biggest rounds I've ever gotten. Had some 24 inch rounds a couple years ago... but they weren't 4 houses away. Still, the 21 inchers are about twice the weight of my kiddo in the first pic! I can still lift him... the big rounds... no chance! And, well, um... the trailer is small! 5'x8'. But the two loads today will be all but a cord, I think.
You don't often get a score like that one! Looks like it might be a Chestnut oak...? Keep the pics coming.
Very nice and congrats on the extra score while scoring on the original score. I'll bet if there is ever a blow down, that you'll be getting a call from them!
So, I'm a bit disappointed today. The two loads from yesterday filled four pallets arranged in a square... all but 8'x8'... and three rounds high. I could put more on there, although that would involve some heavy lifting. So, I has hoping to get some :stacke: done today to make more room. Alas, it is raining... so my logs and my chopping block / are are soggy. Maybe some Christmas day splitting will be in order. Oh, and BTW, I scored 6 free pallets yesterday too! They will ultimately become cords 13 through 15!
Tell your wife on Christmas morning " I gotta get the wood before it rots - I wont be long ":stacke: she will understand.. bob
Update time! After the Christmas day rain, I've been able to get out the last couple days for some and :stacke:! Temps in the 40s through 60s, so was very comfortable. The two trailer loads from a couple days before Christmas are now processed (except for one remaining trunk round). The processing yielded just under a cord. I'll have to measure the stack to be certain, but I think I'm at about .9 cord so far. I don't have a machine, so this all was done by hand. But, gotta say that I only had two portions of pieces that I couldn't get through with the trusty RT210 maul. The trunks processed real nice... grain straight as an arrow and very satisfying splitting sounds. Most had a crack starting right through the middle, so was able to get on that and halve each of the big rounds (all about 21-22 inches) in 5 to 7 shots. From there, easy pickins to knock 'em into sixths or eigths, and then to the proper size splits from there. Most everything after halving the big rounds was single shots! And I must mention that the backyard smells of fresh split red oak... a very nice touch! BTW... the split count from the big rounds was somewhere around 24 per round. Admittedly, I likely split smaller than many of you, but there were plenty of good sized splits that will burn, and burn, and burn! Looking forward to 18/19 already! More updates and, of course, pics to come! Likely heading up the street for another couple trailer loads tomorrow! And, yes, I know I suck!
Update #2! Got started on the second big red oak on the property up the street. About 40 foot worth of trunk. A tad less diameter than the first red oak from this property, but I'm not complaining. The cutting into rounds was the easy bit. Getting them off the property will be a bit more challenging. But, it shall be done. Here's a couple pics from today's cutting! Looking forward to seeing how these bad boys look in Cord #14, all nicely , , and :stacke:!
Most excellent RobGuru.... One small piece of advice for you, fellow hoarder- Aleve. Before and after. Gooder.
