Dumped a small elm this afternoon. About 16 inches at the base. I always high stump a tree as I dont like being on my knees or bent over like the IRS is at me when cutting down a tree in the snow and thickets were I cut at. Most generally our temps are much colder than they have been this year so these heavily moisture laden elms are not froze clean thru. The tree dropped exactly were I wanted it to (Sorry no pics or vids as when I cut wood I go for 1 reason only) but it was funny to watch as the tree fell. It took what seemed like an eternity for it to give up it;s home on this planet. The back cut opened up a small amount and then just stopped. I thought about just wedging it but it was on it's way to ground between 3 really big and nice walnuts and some other immature elms that I didnt want to have to domino to just to get a hung tree on the ground. I did however have to tickle the hinge a couple times as you can see by the chain marks(maybe).

The twisted wood fibers of Elm can make for an interesting drop some times even on the small ones. I know it is hard to see but it is like tryin to cut a bowl full of noodles with a chainsaw.
It aint much of a truck load but then, the tree was 16 inches at the base and almost 60 foot tall and each and every piece was carried out on my shoulder about 50 yards thru deep snow and dense brush. Biggest pieces are up front so ya aint gonna seeum but a guess is right at 1000 lbs. of wet red elm.

Might have to go after another one tomorrow.
I have been cutting around the walnut trees for years as I would like to save them for why I dont know, but I would rather burn elm than walnut cuz I get warmer processing walnut than I do burning it iffn you know what I mean. Some really big cottonwood trees there too. BUT, man are they big. I would cut them and use them but 4 foot DBH? NAW, my back aint that good.
    Thanks fer reading.

I have cut elm for years and even back before I had a splitter I have never had to much trouble splitting elm. Just gotta know when the time is right to put metal to wood.

    Nice work right there!

I really appreciate red elm. Around my parts, they don't get too much bigger than that before they die anyway.
I would have left the walnuts also......

Plenty of Elm in Iowa. I like it. Some splits a bit tough. Where abouts in Iowa are you located? Most of our snow is gone.
