I think one thing they worry about with oak is that the chestnuts tend to grow taller and therefore would block the sun from a lot of trees, especially the younger ones. But as you stated, it will take a long time and they are still not done with the cross-breeding, back-cross breeding, genetic modifying, etc. All still in trial and testing albeit in many plots all over the east and midwest. And as they plant, I think 10% so far is the best they've got to show resistance to the blight and in most cases way less than that. In addition, it will take a few generations to know what the final result will be. Then too, before planting them on any government land they have to be approved by the USDA and that is no easy step.

I think July 4th weekend is when they run the mill as display, floating logs and pulling them into the mill with winches

Yea I have spoken with some of the folks in the chestnut foundation, some that have trees planted on their property for the breeding program.

She lifted it up by the uprights to see how hefty and built it was and her pinkies ended up on the cutting bit. Just little nicks. She is fine. She must have missed the safety training class on it.

There is a back story on the flag. I gifted a flag in a karma thread a few months ago to NH wood. Unicorn 1 asked about shortly after it was claimed. I happened upon this flag and remembered that he missed out on it. So I am happy that I was able to send it his way.

Clem, the pillows are his.

I read some threads of Unicorn 1 and figured he likes to turn a wrench or two. I came up with forging the wrenches into coat hooks for his shop or home, and needed a piece of barnboard.

We just had some snow when I went to the house salvage store yard and kicked over a piece of wood that was holding the tarps covering the boards. I looked at it caked in ice and saw it was a piece of a beam of old-growth fir. I walked inside to the counter and I asked how much and the guy laughed and said $5, probably just to get me out of there. I laughed to myself on the way out since I knew exactly what I had. A few hours by the stove and it was almost ready to put to use.

So those wrenches are made of some alloy steel, and I had them heated to bright yellow heat in the forge at about 1,800 degrees to get them to move. They are hard steel.

The wrenches were hard to forge into nice sweeps, but I tried. I think they would make great knife material.

fishingpol yes those wrenches are chromium steel, and they're very hard to maneuver.....

I think it looks great. A cool and one-of-a-kind piece! Quite a few years back I forged a big trade knife and handguard out of a scrap locomotive exhaust valve, pretty sure it's got vanadium in it because it was EXTREMELY hard to work flat. But it turned out awesome and it keeps an edge like nothing else...

I love those old school wrenches. Love the ones that came with tractors, that say JD or Ford on them or whatever

I've seen that knife Scotty, and it is very nice.

I think one of these were made in Taiwan and the others US made. Once forged and wire brushed, they all looked the same color, which surprised me. A cobalt bit barely touched these, and that's when I read up on the alloy. Yes, chromium. Tough stuff.
