Upgrading my daily driver and most likely replacing my heavy hauler as well. ('05 GMC Canyon avg'd 17-18 MPG, '89 GMC C3500 7.4L 6-7 MPG) That's a tall order for any machine but I'm willing to give this one a shot.

    I like it!

BTW You say you got 16-17 in your Canyon?

I bought a Colorado, with the 3.5L, brand new. Z71 4x4, has aftermarket tires and wheels, but extremely close to the same size. The highest I had seen was 20.5 (pre-ethanol) on a highway trip, and around 16.5 in the city. (This was 6-7 years ago).
Checked it last year, and I am averaging 15.5 in the city (tops), and on a highway ride to a GTG, I saw 17.5.
This is with the 3.73 rear end, just thought I would pick your brain a little. I wont be surprised if your Silverado does better on fuel than you Canyon. I know inlines by design don't get the mileage, but you would think the Colorado/ Canyon would get better mileage than a full sized truck. I gripe occasionally, but love the truck, it hasn't given me an ounce of problem.

I LOVE the GMT 355s. Mine sounds like it was pretty identical to yours and 18 MPG was pretty normal for average MPG unless it snowed and I was driving around in 4WD. But I did a couple things to it that helped it out quite a bit. ;)

The BEST thing you can do for a 3.5L 'rado or Canyon is ditch the factory intake. Pronto. I have never seen an engine respond so dramatically to a simple cold air intake upgrade. I ran the K&N setup, was worth nearly 20HP and the butt dyno agrees. I still have my kit too if it's something you're interested in.

Pull the exhaust manifold and gut the baby cat that's in it. It's damm near useless after the truck has been running for 5-10 minutes. Notice that the secondary O2 sensor is located downstream of the pre-cat so deleting it will not set a "Check Engine" light. Best part about this mod is the price. Free! Well, maybe a new exhaust gasket and donut.

A bed cover is worth a point or too in the MPG arena too. Mine paid for itself.

Not really a MPG improvement but if you are running the factory 15" aluminum wheels for the Z71, you don't know what you are missing. I bought a set of 18" new-take-offs from a 2012 Sierra and machined them to fit the Canyon. (Bolt pattern is the same but hub size was bigger on the Canyon, easy fix!). Lots of aftermarket wheel choices out there. Swapping out wheels/tires made a bigger ride/handling improvement than anything else would have. Your kinda limited on what you can do to a leaf spring/torsion bar 4x4 truck, but it felt like I had lowered the truck 2" and installed massive sway bars with performance shocks. In reality, I just took all the tire flex from those 31" tires on 15" rims out of the equation.

It wasn't unusual to see it turn in a 20 MPG tank in the summer and 23-24 was typical for all-highway. This was all on E10 regular fuel too. Supposedly getting the PCM retuned by one of the enthusiast tuners is supposed to make a big difference as well.

I also had synthetic fluids in mine from bumper to bumper. Also cleaning the throttle body assembly every other oil change is a good thing to keep these trucks running good.

Here she is, I'll never forget that truck.

Yes! It was a major bonus to buying this truck! Quite bit of $$ that I didn't have to shell out post-purchase for that one.

I'm definitely a fan of the new 2014 front ends and interiors. Sharp looking trucks they are.

Pure dumb luck. Went to this dealer to see a couple other offerings, didn't see this one listed online. Was actually on my way to go see my preferred GMC dealer. Figured I'd stop in the Chevy dealer across the street first just for kicks. The sales man hardly let me out of the car and mentioned he had a couple of '13s on the back lot that were "great buys". Still skeptical, I wandered up there to have a look. When he came up with the keys and I saw the integrated trailer brake controller, the spray in liner, and the odometer, I started to get pretty interested. By that afternoon I had a price and a truck I was happy with.

I don't think it was a dealer demo due to the spray in liner. Why spend $600 beans on an add on for a truck you are never going to work and unload in a year? It not a rental either. Maybe someone really wanted a 2014 (they're pretty) or went to a small car? Hitch doesn't have a scratch on it inside or out either.
