    100% Norway maple. Great firewood too. Seasons in around 1.5-2 yrs, burns a lot like hard maple...

    Worth a guess either way we all learn something - see Scotty Overkill has extensive background in cutting so he sees the key things that would distinguish this from a hickory or even possibly Ash.

    The main giveaways why this would be Maple is the spalting of the heartwood
    Ash is typically white heartwood - with somewhat similar bark but no detailed chain-link pattern
    Hickory will always have a reddish-brown heart wood with a wider less detailed chain-link bark(depending on the species not applicable to shagbarks)

    The bark, the cambium layer and the spalted heartwood usually, in combination, are distinct to that tree.
