I finally got around to making one (actually giving it to my mother as part of her Christmas)
    Turned out nice.
The lid is two pieces tongue and grooved together, the corners are mitered and the bottom floor is dadoed in

I did stain it to match the mantel but don't have a picture of it after I stained it

I've shown it to some people and they said the same thing.

I am a carpenter by trade so I enjoy it and kind of feel like I have to do more than just the very basic when I build something.

Anything that's worth cutting down a tree for is worth doing right, don't the Lord love a 2x4!

That's nice--I use an old bushel basket and am about to make another one myself from an old worn-edged box my 80 year old friend gave me---looks like he put his feet up on it as he smoked his pipe---a long bit ago someone had posted an in-home picture of their rec room and there was an orange box I thought was their kindling box--it even said Stihl on the side---I'd love to see what everyone's using----

I would show picture but I use a plastic storage container. I have often thought of building a nice box but have never got around to it. You did give me another idea though and that is instead of a stain finish or a paint finish some upholstery would look nice also.

THAT'S IT!!!!! So it was You! When I get my box done I'll post a picture---till then everyone knows what a bushel basket looks like---and yes fabric would add an interesting appearance to your box Curdog---remember flammability though.....

Nice looking craftsmanship. I like it right down to the recessed routered finger slot for opening the lid.
