There was a big red stain in my driveway this morning. Looked like someone poured out some red paint. I think a hawk got a rabbit or squirrel but there was no fur, hair or entrails for me to figure it out from. Didn't get to see the kill but is still is pretty cool getting to see the some of the evidence and trying to piece together what happened.
No, blood for sure, cars are in the garage with no stains under them. It was right next to my wheelbarrow load of wood and I wasn't bleeding yesterday when I put it there.
Figured it out, rabbit. I went looking nearby and found a trail of blood in the snow leading to where it looked like the hawk did some dining. I guess it is more of a streak then a puddle.
Sure what it looks like to me, I know between the hawks and the coyotes they are pretty hard on small game around here.
Do you have any owls in your area? They'd have no trouble dropping down fer a snack and flying off with it.
I find those sign in the yard occasionally. Usually rabbit fur, although sometimes a bunch of feathers. Found a few small blood puddles in the yard under our burning bush last month, but never found the carcass. Pretty sure something got dead, and something else got a meal.
Hawks are more prevalent here than owls. I've seen hawks nail songbirds on the feeder in the past. In a flash all that is left is a poof of feathers. I've also seen hawks tearing apart rabbits in the backyard before. Not to say that owls aren't around, I did once pull an owl carcass out of my woodpile. It went in after something and got stuck I presume. The other cool thing I have seen is wing tip indentations in the snow lined up with a squirrel or other small animal track suddenly ending. Silent evidence of nature in action.
