Gotta' rant for a minute

So, made dinner and had some. So did mom.
She attempted to turn on the light over the stove but turned on the fan instead.........unbeknownst to me.
I had a nice fire going, stove at about 650, and the house warming with an outside temp of 3 or 4°.
As I'm sitting here switching between several sites (but spending most of my time right here), I began noticing more of a draft than usual on my shoulders and arms.
Got up to go to the kitchen and heard a noise that I didn't immediately recognize. The fan.
Yep, mom had turned it on, but not back off.
Must have been running for at least 1/2 an hour.
No wonder the house was cold.
Certified, can you hear me now?
She just turned 84 in early January and things slip past her quite often, so I try not to get upset with her, but dang it....I hate being cold. So, if anyone thinks it's no big deal when an exhaust fan is running, guess again.

Hey, my wife does that all the time, and she is only 63.

 

Lost my 88 yo mother a few days before Xmas last year. She did those kind of things too. Wish I had her back,....................I could live with turning the fans off. My point being, enjoy her while you have her.

 

Running the exhaust fans in my place pulls some COLD air in too. One of the stud cavities in the hall has 3 2" pipes running through the header and into the attic. So makeup air comes from there.
Before that running a fan, dryer, etc would make the front door hard to close. Also would suck smoke out of the wood stove.

I installed a timer switch on the bath fans, works nice. It's like a regular switch but has a built in timer. Turn the switch to off and it stays on for 15-20 mins.
Would let it run to pull the moisture or stink out and sometimes forget.

 

Exhaust fans suck......

It's amazing how quickly a 300 cfm fan can recirculate the air in your house. Hope it doesn't take to long to warm the place back up.

On xmas someone forgot to shut off the downdraft fan on our cooktop. It's exterior an mounted unit so no one noticed for hours. Was sending 900CFM of 72 degree air to the great outdoors

 

Ok, ok, I get it......we all forget things.
Scotty, our attic stair hatch is probably letting more warm air out than I care to think about....although I have.
Along with all the other air sealing and insulating I'm doing, that's on the list. Whoever installed it, put it in cockidieyed, and it won't seal when folded up.
Pretty typical for the whole house.
Once I find things like that, I ...just ....can't........not....fix 'em.

 

Just curious, how is attic storage really possible while having proper insulation? R40-r50?

I see full attics like on movies and assume its "Hollywood". Example Home Alone... It played the other day.

 

Few old houses back east had attic insulation.

The insulation is in the roof trusses.
Doubt it's R50 though, but new codes & products are making big improvements.
Not sure how vapor barrier & venting is done.

 

The clothes dryer is my big pet peeve leak. Let's take the warm house air heat it up more with electricity and expel it directly outside thereby pulling in more cold outside air, great idea! It astounds me how big of a waste this is and how dryer technology has not changed in decades. Ventless condensing heat pump dryers have been available in Europe for some time, ask your appliance dealer about them and they look at you like you have three heads.

I requested one time that the dryer not be run in the frigid cold weather, I'll just let you guess at the response that got!
