So I have had it with the never ending cold temps in the NY region. In 30 years of living here I have never seen it this cold for such an extended period of time. After spending the morning clearing snow and rearranging the piles I just could not get warm. So after a good cleaning I fill up the 30 with some of the finest I have, ran the Breckwell on level 3 which I never do and I finally felt better. The 30 got really HOT though. The pipe was cold to the touch at the farthest point from the stove, for at least 7 seconds until I had to move my hand way. Anyway, the house is nice and toasty now.
Agree, this weather IS winter, something we haven't seen (and felt) in awhile. We aren't nearly as cold as you, but this snow and ice has been a bear! My deck is a sheet of ice, along with the walkways. Snow everywhere, piles everywhere, and yes cold. Hopefully in another month, this cold trend breaks. It will be another month until the yard dries out too probably.
Yea You guys got winter this year. Bet you appreciate the wood stove even more. Your snow will be melting in few weeks, This "Winter's" memories (good or bad) will last a lot longer than the snow Burning some good dry hardwoods & cranking out some serious heat BTUs. Good memories.
Well Seasoned, I was shoveling the snow off of the deck this morning. It was heavy snow and my deck is almost 30 years old so i dont like all that heavy stuff on it. Im ready for June.
KatwillNY, I used to worry when I ran my stove hot when it was cold. But after 40 years with no problems and remembering what my Uncle used to say, "It's a wood stove, it is suposed to HOT", I don't worry so much anymore. When it gets cold, I just crank them up and get warm. Oh, my uncle had a pot belly stove in his shop, with single wall stove pipe going to a square block, clay tile lined chimney, that he burned nothing but carpenter scraps, mostly pine and spruce. As a child I don't ever remember that thing when some part of it wasn't glowing red hot. Mind you, being a firefighter for 35 years, I don't advocate not being as safe as possible. But my Uncle burned that old thing for 50 years that way and although he has passed away, the shop is still there and the new owners are still burning the old pot belly stove. So be safe but don't be afraid to burn your stove. If it is installed properly, and you practice safe burning, you will be fine........and WARM. Chief
Dave, you aint kiddin man. Winter left Alaska and came to NY. Love that stove, both of them but the wood one I have a special relationship with. Is like that mischievous kid that from time to time scares the crap out of you but you still love it. For instance today, it scared me, I dont like to see it at 850 degrees.
thanks Chief I try to keep her at around 700 but today the 3 year old prime wood got her hot. lol. Yea those potbelly things were built tough, I know someone who has a potbelly that is over 50 years and he still uses it regularly.
Here is a nice chart that may help. I actually saw on a fire call one Christmas Eve, a single wall stove pipe during a violent chimney fire that was white hot! Almost transparent. Now that is HOT!
Winter is back here. Just in my area the snow is gone. The Frost line is going deep now. Single digit nights, teens to mid 20s daytime. Windy past few days.
Snow "flurries" here for the past hour but looks like regular snow to me.. Just topped off my 40" wood hoop plus an overflow pile beside it.. I tend to do overdo things my wife says lol.. Stove had very few coals left this AM from a burn I loaded 14 or so hours prior and the upstairs heat came on as I got up.. It was 64 upstairs and 61 downstairs.. Granddaughter slept over and I decided to let the heat keep her warm or she might be up at 6AM.. Money well spent as she got up around 7:30AM and the house is warmed up again.. 1st time I let the oil heat run this year and it didn't run long..
Kat, many are feeling the difference this year. For sure this is not the first of this type we've had but it has been quite some time since it was this cold for this long. Should be good for maple syrup this spring!
Dennis, this winter is for the birds man. I have never seen so much snow in these here part. And the cold never ends. I may need to break up the winter and fly down to the Islands even if for a long weekend.
