Hello FHC, I'm trying to remove the cylinder on this 041 saw. How do you get to the cylinder bolts? Is a case splitter needed to separate the case?
I did the piston, rings and some new gaskets on my dad's 041 years back just a regular T handle Allen wrench I believe, don't think it has any torx hardware. Just sticks down through the holes in the cooling fins to reach the heads. As for the case I couldn't tell you I didn't have to get that far into it and by the way she is a heck of a chain puller in the cut sounds good too
I want to say they are 4 or 5mm hex heads. A case splitter is handy, you can make one out of a flat bar (about 1 1/2" wide) that bolts to the bar studs and has a hole for the crankshaft, then put a gear puller on it and they pop apart pretty easy. The first one I made was out of 1/4" steel and it worked, but I bent it a bit, so I built another out of 1/2" and it has not bent yet.
A case splitter is very nice and the easiest, but I split dozens of cases before I had a splitter. Just make sure you clean out all the crankcase holes really well so you can be 100% sure you got all the crankcase bolts out. If you accidentally leave one in and split the case, well, you will split the case beyond repair. We won't talk about how I know. Fifelaker is right, should be 5mm hex on those cylinder bolts.
Is it just me or are the threads a bit buggered in the plug hole? If they are now is the time for a timesert or have it welded and new threads tapped.
Does it have a fuel cap? I'd be interested in some pictures. The one I have is split and the replacements I've found don't seem to be correct
I'm really curious to see if it's vented the ones I've found are not and seem to pressurize the tank and force gas into the carb flooding it out I just don't know how it can be vented that direction without squirting gas everywhere either so maybe I'm just missing something
I'll let you know this weekend, right now I'm doing 7-15s and I don't come home with enough energy to even walk out to the shop. I'm crossing my fingers I won't be working Sunday.
I believe so, the old cap would spurt fuel straight out of the little hole where the replacement cap has a little screw. Trouble is the replacement cap seems to not vent at all and buries the saw with fuel
