Question for the forum. How cold does it get before you fire up the pellet furnaces? I have been heating with oil in Oct/Nov. Oil and pellet prices were pretty good in WI so its kind of a wash. Only used a quarter tank of oil. Mild weather is coming to the end.

If it's the same price, I would just continue with oil personally. Unless pellet burning is more of a hobby.

I'm with IHP. I haven't burned a single wood pellet yet. In fact, the Revolution needs some work before I can even fire it up. I'm in no hurry. I have about 700 gallons of propane to burn through. Bought at $1.59, so I'd have to find pretty cheap pellets to make up the difference in work. I have enough going on, if I don't have to tend to a pellet furnace, that opens up time elsewhere. If costs are the same, I'm heating my house by pressing a button.

Comfort wise, I'll probably start to fire the beast up on weekends when it's below 32 degrees, or extra windy. Give me a nice cozy feeling, and heats the basement a little better, and we spend more time in the basement on the weekends.

Being burning on low for a week on rye seeds but I shut it off. Weather outside isn't very cold, up & down. The Harman is picking up the slack in the mean time. Another mild autumn and soon to be winter so it's getting closer. Just a little wait more, yeah right. Price of oil is shooting up which might make your choice easier.

I've probably been burning since sometime in August, early September at the latest. I don't care how cold it is outside - it is inside that counts. I think I toughed it out until it was 65 in the afternoon on a regular basis. Pellet stoves are my main source of heat. Propane is expensive here (even with my new company that is saving me $1/gallon from my previous supplier), the boiler is 25 years old (so not very efficient) and with the pellet stoves I get both main floor and basement heated (boiler only piped in for main floor).

I burned 8 bags in November and just fired the furnace back up yesterday. I don't run it unless it's going to stay in the 30s or lower for highs. Otherwise it stays on low burn too long and gets dirty quicker.

Pellets and oil cost about the same around here, so I'll flip flop between the two depending on what Mother Nature has in store.

I'm usually on pellets (if only at night) by mid-October. This year I was too broke to buy pellets until yesterday so I was on NG. I'll finish re-installing my stove Sunday and the house will be nice and toasty tomorrow PM.

Furnace is turned back on last night and I think that it will stay on for the long haul. It's calling for 3*F next Friday night and a high of 14*F Saturday day so it's getting colder and colder:shiver:

Jay Z, Winter is headed your way today, We are having our first measurable snow this morning and it looks like our warm weather is over.
When it is above 35 degrees we use a heat pump because of the low operating cost So to answer your question when it's below 35 outside.
I've been burning the new to me Fahrenheit at night and a Quadra Fire that is in my living room during the cooler days.
Burn mostly corn in the pellets burners. Wood pellets are getting more affordable this year, If they go on a super sale this season I will stock up a few tons and not bother with the corn next year. Locally corn can be bought for $100 a ton however it needs to be cleaned because I buy from a local farmer.

It's not a humid cold like in Toronto so it makes it a bearable difference:yes:

Anything under 30 is when I pretty much stop doing anything outside unless it HAS to be done. Don't know how they do it either.

Well we have no choice in the matter. It helps a lot when the cozy home is nearby. I know quite a few folks who work in the frigid weather bare hands:loco: , not my cup of tea:doh:

The ONLY thing I like about winter is my stove and that is it...

I like that I can grow pretty flowers and sjrubs that need a dormant time before they will next bloom, and my pellet stoves, and that the cats snuggle up to me. A bonus, not necessarily one I like but is beneficial, is the exercise I get shoveling and snow blowing. Everything else about winter I can definitely do without.

    Arti,

My furnace has been on as of Dec 1st. Going to be in the 20s for highs by the weekend. I bought my pellets in spring at low prices and have 2.5 tons in my basement and 2 tons in garage. I have a barn where I keep a few extra tons for the great WI winters.

Exactly. It's only 30 degrees here right now, but 99% humidity, and it's just plain uncomfortable! I know it's gonna get a lot colder, but that humidity needs to settle down a little bit.
