image.jpg Long time lurker in the pellet forums .Never owned a pellet stove. Lifelong wood burner . OccaisionaLEE post about pellet markets as I've spent 25+ years in the biomass supply side of the industry .
Anyways ,,, I found this Harmon Pellet pro 2 for sale ($400) and just wondered if this is the right unit and price. I've read often that Harmons will eat about any quality pellet and like it. I'd like to be able to even run cherry pits.
Guy ran it up until last year removal without issue.
Looks like it may have been a damp basement dweller or poorly stored since removal ??
    Deal or no deal???

Older unit with I think has a discontinued control board which can be retrofitted with a newer one if you're handy. Others will chime in soon enough:cheers:

Unless the metal is really eaten away - a bit of surface rust can be sanded out, new paint and she'll look good as new. I, like the others, would worry more about if the blowers/motors work and also if you think you could handle a board upgrade yourself if you had to (I would have to hire someone). Wouldn't upgrade board for the heck of it though.

Can you get a definite answer on how old that is? It should have a tag either on the control door or under the hopper lid or on the backside of the stove with a born-on date.

Um, maybe don2222 could put in a few words too.

There is no real upgrade board for the Harman Pellet Pro II because of the manual feed knob.
Harman never has the Manufacture date on their stoves. The test date is not the date of manufacture.
Only Harman can look up the serial # and give you the date of Manufacture. :-(

A neighbor owned that stove JustWood - they throw out the heat. They traded-up to an Accentra, and sold their stove, through the dealer, for $1,200 .. that stove was in excellent, dealer-maintained shape. * The dealer didn't buy it, they just acted as a broker for someone they knew that wanted a well maintained, used Harman.

A non-Harman owner here, but I've been looking in this area, and from the pic, I've seen a lot worse around here at 2x the price, exterior-condition wise.

+1 with everyone above, bringing some fresh pellets & doing a test run / making sure the motors, augers, and control board / panel are working o.k. is the biggest concern when buying an older used stove.

(If that stove was in good condition inside, ran ok, and just had some surface rust to cleanup, I'd buy it.)

    hmmm.....short story....I wouldn't do it.

You could POSSIBLY upgrade the board, but you'd need a new wiring harness, and who knows how good the fans are? The PP2 came from the hand adjuster days, as for manufacture....over 20 years old....MANY parts aren't available anymore for a quick changeout..
As for the date, I'm not even sure they kept track back then.

I do know of one still running, but when it dies, that's it. Generally speaking, when you cant get parts, most dealers aren't going to spend the time jury-rigging it to make it work, so, you'd be on your own.

I am not sure you want this to be your first experience in the pellet world. If I were you, I would just keep looking around and eventually the right deal will pop up.

Enough said . Making a pass.
I can fix about anything but time is an issue . I spend a full day a weekend in the shop fixing equipment just to roll the next week.
Thanks guys . I'll keep looking. I kinda have time savings and ease of fuel procurement in mind down the road.

Ahh, some good practical, knowledgeable advice.

If you aren't in a huge hurry to get a stove, then that is great and you can wait for the right stove and right deal. After all, I fell into a $1k 2012 P43 just because I didn't need the stove (had a 2008 St. Croix that was doing okay on the main floor). Got the P43 spring of 2015 - the first spring that oil prices had dropped so lots of stoves on CL. The owners needed me to take it on a specific weekend as they were moving, but wanted to use it right up until they left. They originally wanted $1600 for it. Obviously they had no better offers so finally let me have it for what I offered. Not saying you'll find that good a deal, but not having to rush a purchase is definitely your ally.
