Why Winter Drivers Need To Slow Down.............

Lets face it.

People are idiots! When those people drive, it amplifies their stupidity!

 

The title of the thread should read "Why drivers need to slow down".

I have seen same callousness exhibited by drivers during ideal summer conditions -blasting through accident scenes.
Usually the same state's plate involved....

 

Horrible! Those troopers were heroes.

 

Agreed! My wife taught me this. Unfortunately, she lost her little sister in a traffic disaster in AK. She absolutely makes me stay off the road in adverse conditions. It's amazing how much you don't "really" need to be on the road in winter, once you put it in that perspective!!!!!!!!! Second, for those who really need to be on the road, don't rush! Third, for the last 5 years I have been running winter tires in winter and summer tires in summer. Guess what, summer tires are better than all-seasons in summer and winter tires are better than all-seasons in winter. I'll never go back to the compromise of "all season" tires ever.

For the first winter in 20 years I will not be going out during a snowstorm. I decided after last winters 30" blizzard that it just isn't worth it and I was done. Over the course of those 20 years I have seen some of the worst driving you could imagine. It's almost always someone in an SUV that thinks they can do anything just because they have 4WD. One incident I remember quite vividly involved a Jeep CJ; or whatever they're called now.

I was crossing the Susquehanna River at about 25mph heading North. It was snowing but it wasn't a blinding snow. The Jeep was coming up a Southbound on-ramp which is part of the bridge. It started to fishtail but instead of letting off the gas, it appeared he gunned it. Now it's sideways and totally out of control. It flipped one time and bounced up in the air on its big balloon tires, coming to rest leaning up against the bridge guardrail. If it would have bounced just a little bit higher it would have flipped right over the guardrail and dropped about 60' into the river.

This winter I plan to watch the snow fall from the comfort of my little room and throw a log on the fire when it's needed.

Slow down folks. Wherever you're going, it's not that important.

 

Man... I might have to take up drinkin again after watchin that... whew. Unbelievable everyone survived... especially the lady who got thrown across the road.

 

The sad thing is that no one stops to help out anymore. If you stop to help, many officers would just tell you to get back in your car and keep going. There are many able bodied intelligent people out there who could have intelligently lent a hand slowing traffic or helping the patrolmen but they are accustomed to not ask for help from the public and the public is conditioned to leave the abnormal to the care of the trained professionals. That's my take on things where I have lived and driven although I still look for opportunities where I can stop and help out.

Last winter I used non-studded winter tires for the first time, and I won't be going back to studs.

 

Lets face it...the Jeep CJ/Wrangler is probably not the best vehicle for highway speeds on slippery roads....ya think??

Especially with the oversized tires.

 

Scary stuff, last winter we had a dusting on the highway and ended up with a 30 car/semi truck pile-up. Of course nobody in Cinci knows how to drive in the snow, 2" will shut down the city for the day. 1" is enough to turn my 45 minute commute into 2.5 hours. Common logic around here is, "I have 4 wheel drive, I can do anything I want".

 

In Maine too bassJAM ... the 4x4 crowd seems to be the most likely one stuffed into a snowbank every time... hey, if I can get going in just about a foot of snow... that must mean I can go 70 on glare ice... weeeeeeee...

 

Between this and trying to get people to get on a three year plan, you've got your hands full!
