Hi I wonder if you Guys can help ID this wood. I think it may be Maple, if it is its the first time I have come across it as it is not native to Scotland. The land where I collect it also has some Red Oak also not a native. Thanks for any help Stewart
The few Norway Maples I've seen have an Ash like bark with Maple leaves, so I'd say You have Norway Maple there.
Yup, looks like Norway Maple. It's actually considered an invasive here. It tends to grow a very dense canopy of leaves and shades out everything around it - even the grass. It's pretty decent wood though - mid range btus, dries fast, splits easy (usually).
Yup, Norway Maple. My house is surrounded by them. Developers put them in when they built our houses. The leaves are a pain in the butt cause there's so many of 'em and they are the last tree to lose their leaves. Have to leaf blow a few times.
From the leaf and light, clear wood I would agree with Norway. Just grabbed a couple cord of it myself! I think the growth rings should be substantial, also, as it's known to grow fast. The trees we cut up had some pretty fat growth rings. Being loaded with Irish and Scottish in both trunks of our family tree, my wife and I are looking forward to a trip overseas some day.. Mind if we get a hold of you for some good advice on room and board?
Looks like maple to me. On a side note you are the only one I've seen who has their splitter up on the stand you can get. I've got one in my den and use it for kindling and the odd huge split. It's very impressive for its size.
Norway. I like it. Splits, easy drys fast, heats like sugar maple. Invasive though. If I were to plant trees for future firewood it's what I would pick. It grows fast
