My mother in law wanted me to have my father in laws spltter after he died, so I finally picked it up yesterday. I have no idea how he ever started it. I had a 5 horse Briggs that was totally wore out an felt like very little compression. Picked up a 6-1/2 horse Predator from Harbot Freight for 94.00 + tax slapped on and it fired and ran in the second pull! Gotta replace the suction line for the pump yet as the old one is collapsed.

Don't really know,it is fairly slow but the suction side hose is collasped down also so I didn't really run it very much.

Only issue I have had with the predator engines is they don't like to sit with fuel. I now always shut off the fuel and let them run the carb out. The main jet seems to plug up awful easily compared to other small engines.

Another vote for the predator engines. A friend has one on his, seems like it floods easy sometimes, probly old-guy operator error, but usually pops on the first pull. Im sure the FiL would be happy to see it being put to good use.

Hold on here guys.... please school me on these predator motors.... I use my dad's old splitter and I have to tighten the damm valves and stand on one foot, while praying to get the damm thing started... that's when it's warm out too!!!

But for $100 this sounds like a engine I need.... have any of you guys been using one for over a year or two yet???

First one for me, they did have good reviews. Maybe Pallet Pete will chime in.

They are Honda clones and darn good ones at that. I picked one up on sale for my homemade splitter a few years back and put at least 20 cord through it. The gentleman who bought it has put ten times that and it still goes strong. Our lawn mower also has a predator motor and it to fires one pull year after year.

Bang for the buck you can't go wrong.

Here is the splitter I had the predator engine on. I only sold it due to my not being able to bend that low without my previous knee injuries getting painful. We decided to go horizontal vertical instead. Honestly that motor is better then my current Kohler engine that's saying a lot.

And it bolted right up? I ask because my buddy is thinking of replacing his old 5hp horizontal shaft Briggs with the same6.5 hp predator you used.

I originally had a Subaru 5hp and it was a direct bolt swap with the preditor.

I need to get a pic of my old splitter..... I really like how my splitters handle is at the top and in the middle like yours.... I know that allthese new vertical/horizontal splitters handles are offset...I don't really like this...with the handle on the middle I can split wood from both sides of my splitter, rather that just one.....

I will add that my splitter if fixed in the horizontal position and maybe the offset handles on these new splitters are better for the vertical splitting position..

These Chonda's ( Chinese Honda clones) are so close to the original that you can many times take original Honda parts and simply bolt them on. Shocking, but the Chinese have gotten ort good at that. IIRC, Honda motor Corp wasn't too happy with how our happened, but patent laws didn't protect them.

New engine; clean up the rust and prep with rust inhibitor, bit of paint and that splitter will probably serve you well for a long time to come.
