Looking for some input on seasoning time for live hickory trees that would be CSS in the next month or two.

I'm about 75% done CSS for 17/18 and probably will not need it until 18/19.

I've never cut any live trees until this year. I only have scrounged dead standing.

You should be good for 18/19......

I'd say if it's green and full of water when cut, 2 years is a good amount of time. I find If trees are cut in the winter, especially in sub freezing temps, that the drying time can be reduced significantly.

What kind of hickory exactly is it?

The only type of hickory I can identify without any doubt is the shagbark. I know other trees that are hickories but I'm not sure what type they are though.

I split about three cords of shagbark hickory this year--going for 2 years drying time.

Powder post beetles LOVE hickory. Not a big deal but you will see they have visited when you move it.

Never had any hickory although I see shag bark all over the area. Powder post beetles loved my ash and oak last year, didn't get into the maple though?

IMG_4091.JPG Hello At least 2 years, preferably 3. I have been and continue to cut some large live hickory. I actually splitvsome rounds up this morning and posted it on here. My splits are quite large, so maybe if you are on the smaller side 2 would cut it. Good stuff though once dry. Enjoy :dex:
