Here in the northern "The Peoples Republic of Illinoiz" yet!! Granted; we've had 'overnights" in the mid to upper 20's......................but, it's not been COLD......................yet. Just enough for a load or 2 a day so far. Just saying.................
Same here. This morning I had cold lock and filled the house with smoke. Need to keep a warm stove and house to avoid this. Second time this season it's happened. Once we can burn 24/7 we'll be good to go.
Fortunately I don't have a problem with smokey start up with a pretty tall 7 inch stainless steel flu but a guy I work with does and he said he leaves his stove door open for half an hour or so before light up and the warmer inside air warms his flu enough to prevent house from getting smoked up. Don't know if this would work for you, might be worth a try.
Maybe try this. Load the stove as you normally would. Then put a few pieces of kindling on top. You can light the bottom, and the top. The top kindling will preheat the chimney while the bottom will light the rest of the wood and will decrease your startup time. I tend to use this during the shoulder season. Generally I can have the stove top up to 500 degrees in about 10 minutes. And, if you have a sluggish fire, add some kindling to the top!
Same here only most nights are in the mid 30's and have had some in the mid 40's. Enough to make the house cold enough for a single fire, and a small one at that. There have been a few nights with the overnight temperature in the low 20's, and during the day maybe 42 with winds in excess of 60mph, but even then, just a few fires, but all cold starts!
I know where the cold is!!!!! It's in my head! Been there terrible since last Wednesday great way to spend thanksgiving and haven't even felt up to splitting or cutting
Hate it when I do that...but yes it happens. Sometimes I avoided this by opening a window facing toward the blowing breeze. Pressurizes the house a little and forces a draw in the chimney.
Hey Whitey, we have to remember that it is only November. Still a month away from the really cold....I hope.
No real cold to speak of here outside of a day or two. Still burning chunks, uglies, pine, sycamore, and woodworking scraps that I want to get rid of. No need to dip into the 3 year red oak yet!
Same here. Pizzn mehoff ! I'm late to the game getting ready for winter. Don't need this head cold slowing me down.
Thanks. I think it was because the house was cold at 62° and I just threw in the wood and set a SuperCedar in there and lit it. I might try leaving the door open till I feel some updraft.
Sounds like this might be a good idea as I had to throw a SuperCedar on top of the splits to get the heat up. After a couple minutes it did work.
That could help. Twice now I've started a fire when the temperature was not down that far so I let a half of a super cedar in the flue. With our stove, the flue goes out the rear so it is easy to set something in there and light it off. This is enough to warm up the flue and get a draft started. I've done it in the past with newspapers too.
Well it has been cold here. The high today was 27* with a pretty brisk wind. I came down with a flu bug so have not been out side in 4 days. Finally starting to feel a little better now.
bogydave man its hard to like those numbers. I know most of us here look forward to the cold but that's a little much. Sure wish I could send you a big arm full of oak or hickory. Stay warm!!!!
