Used to hand split everything, but the better half bought me a Huskee 22 and we never looked back. On another note, there sure are a lot of people over 60 on this forum. Me included.o_O I don't think most of the young people get into wood splitting and burning like we do.

Hey there Mitch I may be a minority here but hold my part for the young guns, but most people my age are lazy. Easier to turn on the gas furnace and go have a beer.

Both are exercise and I do both depending on how I feel. In the winter I hand split a lot more due to lack of exercise but the majority is still done with the splitter.

Not to start an old vs young war but when I was a kid there was the one fat kid in your grade. Go into a school today and there are a ton of fat kids.

I do both. If it is relatively knot-free and straight-grained I can outrun my Huskee 22 with a 8lb maul...by a looong shot. The ugly stuff, all elm, and all hedge get hydraulic treatment.

I started splitting wood by hand when I was about 9...and I'm pretty damm good at it. Any single wedge splitter has nothing on me on the easy stuff. I realize that I get tired and splitters don't, but I can keep up for 2-3 hours and by then I'm bored with splitting anyway.

Splitting by hand is a mental washing machine. Takes my mind off of everything else...and is about the best exercise know to man.

It is fun to split a pile of Ash with a maul, much faster than a splitter!

I've enjoyed some good maple, some birch, and some dreaded elm.

Maple can be easy at times and difficult others, if you get one from a yard they can be heck to split.

We've found silver maple. Splits beautifully. Gorgeous wood, IMO.

To piggy back on Jacks comments, I don't remember when I was 30ish even seeing to many log splitters around like there is now. They were mainly with the tree surgerns and if you bought one for home use I think they were "BIG"$$$ unless you made it.

I just don't remember seeing them often, then again I couldn't afford one then anyway....

I wouldn't have one except I bought it used for $400 from AC and by the time I am done with mods it will be around 3/4 the cost of a new one but with faster cycle times and a lift. Honestly $1000 and up is to much for me to stomach because I am very resourceful and save almost everything weldable or buildable for use in projects. I used to rent or borrow one about 2 times a year for the big rounds because it was far more cost effective.

I do often feel like i am one of the younger ones on here at 29. Recently got 2 friends to convert to burning wood, there is still hope for the "younger guys".
