I've never seen a 260 metal handle. The metal badge 026 have metal handles in general.

    I prefer the plastic handle.

The 026/260 is the little Saw that could IMHO. Wake up well to all different mods.

Here's one I did pulling a 36. It's not the fastest, for sure, but it did it.

They are best with a 16" picco bar setup, which is no longer available in the USA. Any Canadian friend can help you with that. Also, a .325 7T 16" works well on them.

seems like the 026 with a 36 inch bar could be a bit much. My 461 dogs down with a 32 inch when I have a new or freshly sharpened chain on it. whatever makes you happy though. :dex:

You have a couple mint looking saws right there! That metal badge 026 handle does look plastic.
That is pretty impressive! Does it oil that bar?
I think I will start with the 16" .325 .063 bar and stock sprocket.
It will definetly get the muffler opened up quite a bit. Any other easy way to get some more power?

Unless they have changed the formula, it's not gas resistant. I bought some years ago and dipped pliers and such in it. When you spill gas on it it instantly becomes sticky. I wasn't too impressed with how long it lasts either. Bottom line, I wouldn't waste your money.

It's got the standard oiler. If I let it idle enough, it will keep it wet enough for a cut or two.

It's not meant for that bar, obviously. More of a test to see how much I could get out of it. It's great with a 20" 325. This one was around the 15th of this model I've ported.

Here's the one before it pulling a 25" in Hard Red Oak:

The early 024 and 026 saws both had metal wrap handles with the rubber tubing, later they both were changed to plastic. The plastic wrap handle saws have a "mating" surface for the plastic style handle and will not match up well to a metal handle. I actually prefer the metal handles wrapped in the tubing as well, but the only way to do that is with an early 026 tank and handle, then you'd wind up with a flippy oil cap and old school gas cap. I'd vote for keeping the 260 also, one of the best saws Stihl ever made.

I'm gonna be a different than everyone. I have an 024 super with a 44.7mm top end, 026, and 026 PRO. I am not that fond of this family of saws. I know they are good reliable saws but they just don't have much power. So I saw throw the farmboss bar on the 290 and get it going and sell it. Put the other bar on the 260 and get it running and sell it. Both of those saws will easily bring $250 each here, they both look very nice. You might even get $300 out of them. Then take the money from the 290 and 260 and buy a new MS261cm. You will have more power than the 260, better av, way better filtration, mtronic, and they are more fuel efficient.

That Farm Boss bar is worth it's weight in gold on any Stihl saw around here. Put it on the 290 and sell it. I have a 260 also, with base gasket deleted and a small muffler mod. It keeps up with my 350 and 353 Huskys. I don't like the plastic front handle either, especially in cooler weather. It's a very nice saw that handles well and should treat you nice in the future.

That would be nice if I can get that much for these saws. If I do sell them I wouldn't buy a new saw. I am tempted by all these shiny, pretty saws but I rather have a pile of parts saws. I think that would make me happier.
i sold the the mac today so just the 350 to go.
These are the first stihls I have bought and owned. My father has a 290, my uncle has a 026 and have run a couple others of my friends.

I am surprised that there is no 290 love around here. My father's runs very well, good power and has never had an issue. It is just heavy for its size.

Maybe you can find a 261 to fix up:D

Here is my 261cm with 3/8 chain.

What is wrong with the 350? If it needs a cylinder get a 346 cylinder. They are a little over $100 from a dealer. I have a 350 too:)

That's a very nice saw! I would love to find a 261 for cheap.
This 350 had a stripped screw in the bearing block. Got it back together and ran great but found that it stumbles when it comes out of a longer cut. Fuel problem? Tried tuning it Sunday but still did it.

I just missed this saw yesterday. :headbang: IMG_2822.PNG

Have you had the carb apart? It may need a kit.

Not related to the problem but also check and see if it has a plastic clamp on the intake boot. They have been known to come loose and burn up the cylinder.

Too bad you missed out on the 044. I never see any deals like that here.

Yeah that ducks about the 044! even if locked up that bar is worth $25 unless it's bent, and then you could probably get $25 on ebay for the plastic!
