Hey guys, new to cutting and burning. Picked up a new ms251 last year to get ahead on the wood before I got my recently installed p.e. super insert, love it! Got a decent load of this wood and wondering if anyone has an idea? Seems too light to be anything good and the couple pieces I ran through the splitter seemed spongy and m.m. had 35+%. Thanks !

Doesn't matter what kind of wood it is with a moisture content that high. Did you take a reading with you MM on a fresh split piece of wood? Yuo may have to get the wood split and stacked for a year or more before it would be ready to burn.

Yes it was on a fresh split. Just thought if it was poplar or something I wouldn't bother with it, hard for a rookie to know what I'm looking at

Looks like cottonwood that's been sitting around for a year or so.

Not sure if it's popular....but from looking at the end and the moisture level makes me think it's punky.

Thought that too....but that split doesn't look stringy enough for me to say it's cottonwood.
