I see that Kimberly posted that about her chimney earlier in this thread. Probably that is where that idea came from.

 

Right! A 90 and a tee and a not high enough straight piping section that she needs to get taken care of....with help because it's too close to the edge of the roof. That one.

 

So, this morning I loaded 3 layers of criss-crossing small-medium splits, 2 splits per layer. I put a wad of paper and some kindling in between the 2 splits on the bottom, in front of the doghouse. Lit it and went to take a shower, knowing it would not get too hot because it never has before (in my one month of shoulder season experience).

A few minutes later, I came out of the bathroom to the smell of hot stove, and the sight of a raging inferno inside it. The Caframo Ecofan was trying to get airborne. The guage I had on the stove top showed 700, which means with the infrared at the hottest spot I would have seen about 800.



I closed it down, and turned on the blower, and the inferno quickly got under control. I've had nice secondary burning since, the stove is still quite hot.

I learned a little more about the stove here. It can get very hot very fast. It will light without the door cracked open. It is drafting fine. It can crank out serious heat. It is quite controllable.

I love this stove.

Keep an eye on the stove for half to 1 hr dialing it down in increments

 

Why in increments?

 

if you dial it down to Quick it will just smoke and take a long time to catch back up.
Best way to find out if your burning clean is to go outside and see if your smoking or not.
Obviously it is going ballistic you have to dial it down quick and get it under control.

I closed it up, and it had no problem, burned heavily on secondary air for a while (15+ minutes).

I agree, I do not leave the room with the door cracked. I once did, and asked my love to close it, and she thought she did, but didn't get the handle full down. It got a little warm.

 

If you let it get up to 400-500, no need for incremental adjustments, as long as the wood is dry.
You can do incremental, and watch how it reacts to each change. It's fun, and educational.

I realized this is true with my Drolet Tundra EPA wood furnace, when the tstat is satisfied, boom, the intake damper drops closed instantly...if the firebox was hot enough then it just explodes in fast n furious secondary flames...if not hot enough (or wet wood) then the fire does die off

 

I did not see this earlier. It was not funny and no one should have liked it. My "nerves" have been shot every since Mum died. It was horrible the months following her death but it has greatly improved since. However, there are some things that still bother me because of the nervousness. It isn't the height, I recently stood near a gorge and looking down but there was a railing.

 

I am scared of heights, I'd have a hard time doing that. Climbing ladders and being within about 5 feet of a roof edge gets me.

But no problem in an airplane, I cannot explain it.

 

Yup! First time to the grand canyon (70's) was right at the edge looking straight down....last time there was sorta inching up to the places with railings!! Definitely an age thing.

 

It is all good now, brother-in-law took care of the job. I think now I need to see about the 90 in the flue, see if I can put in two 45s in as I have read that it helps to improve the draft. It was sort of on the cool side in the house yesterday but warm outside. I had a bit of a problem with smoke spillage but the chimney was cold and it was warm outside.
